Re: In depth and understandable information on World community Grid Website on stepstones

Just can't let those one slide.

1. Why would the scientists encourage users to take 7 weeks to return a WU (4hr รท 5min/day)? The project would never get finished!

2. Which is a better use of resources? Supporting one user who can deliver 20 days work each day or 5,760 users who can (maybe) deliver 5 min per day. Rhetorical question.

3. I can't read my email in less than half an hour. What the hell causes someone to only have their computer on for 7 minutes. Choice! And WCG also chooses not to pander to users who can deliver .0000000000852% of the project total each day

Ridiculous imho

I doubt you will find much support for such users, because their contribution is so low and the project administrators need to maximize their "return on investment" when spending their time and resources. Unfortunately, that means we lose support for older platforms and processors that are on for much more than 5 minutes a day.

Seriously, what do you do on a computer for only 5 minutes a day?

I was wondering about that as well. I am not trying to be mean, but I regularly spend more than 5 minutes on my laptop a day (have boinc running in background while watching Netflix). I can understand if you are a consultant and traveling, however even then there should be some days you can leave it running in the background.

I do however would wish that some projects were shorter. I see the Outsmart Ebola time runs as the best, then Uncovering Genomes, and then Mapping Cancer. If there is a technical reason for the Clean Energy project to be that long that is fine, but even if those tasks were shortened down to 5 hours instead of 22 I would download more than the standard setting of 1.

I think there are many of us wondering what could be done with only 5 mins of computer time a day (not knocking it, just curious biggrin ).

Unfortunately, in many of the projects, the scientists don't know there the results will take them. Many times, the first results (possibly a year or more of results) gives the clue as to where the crunching should take place to get positive results. I too wish projects could be faster so to get solutions out the door faster.
