Is there a limit on tasks in progress? My cruncher is hungry!

I have a 48 thread cruncher, with a buffer of 1 day.
I am trying to crunch OET exclusively on this machine and had never got more than 1hr of buffer in all my time crunching.

I recently switched off "If there is no work available for the project...", so that it only pulled OET and I have yet to get a buffer going.

I just looked at that computer and I had 6 tasks running, meaning 42 threads were idle and waiting for work.

And insight or advice would be appreciated.

Here is my log

Yes, 35 tasks per thread is the legal limit [Overall, all projects combined]. Per GPU there's a different limit, for GPGPU work ;-)

BTW, my 8 core has 1 day buffer, about 70 total OETl, so its puzzling why your 48 core is not getting enough to keep all thread busy.

Re: Is there a limit on tasks in progress? My cruncher is hungry!

I am surprised too. I have never seen 70 tasks in progress ever. Maybe 55-60? Even when the WUs are 10mins long or 2.5 hours long.
I have 200Mb internet connection too, so download/upload is not a problem at all.

All my other machines can keep their buffer full too.

I just added UGM as another project and now have

48 UGM crunching
43 UGm (@3hrs50mins est) waiting to start
28 OET (@9mins38secs est) waiting to start

so maybe 6 hours of buffer?

I am really confused!

Re: Is there a limit on tasks in progress? My cruncher is hungry!

How long has the computer been crunching? I know in the past, WUs were limited when a device first starts out until it can prove itself as a reliable cruncher. Not sure if that is still the case, but if it is a relatively new set up, give it a couple days and see if that helps.

Re: Is there a limit on tasks in progress? My cruncher is hungry!

It's a new build for me, but it has been crunching 24/7 for a few months now and has nearly 11 years of run time and 44,388 results returned.
I thought it could have been that, but it's not afaik.

IIRC the initial limit is 5 per core. This is lifted as soon as results are returned, doubled till reaching the per-thread ceiling of IP. (Change without notice;-)

Re: Is there a limit on tasks in progress? My cruncher is hungry!

Hi Everybody,
since about 2 weeks I observed an interesting (but concerning) asymmetry between two hosts.
The both hosts are Phenom II x6 based and running boinc 7.2.42 on Ubuntu 14.04 x64.
The both hosts are located at the same place using the same Internet connection.
The both hosts use the same boinc/wcg profile. I've checked that the profile parameter values are used, overwriting local preferences.
Usually the both hosts buffer around 200 OET1 WUs.

However currently one host is still able to buffer between 100 and 200 OET1 WUs, until the second one is always very close to run dry, "buffering" only less than 30 OET1 WUs (i.e. around 1 hour of work).

I cannot understand the reason for these different behaviors and why one host is not able anymore to buffer reasonably.
This situation is becoming a little bit concerning because of the current number of very short WUs (< 20 minutes/WU).

Does anyone have an idea for this strange behavior?
BTW: a reboot did not help to improve the situation.

Cheers,
Yves

Re: Is there a limit on tasks in progress? My cruncher is hungry!

Yves,
I switched to OET + UGM and I get enough UGM now to make sure the cruncher has work.

I will switch to OET only again to see what happens.

What is funny, is the my 8 thread cruncher regularly gets the max 280 tasks of OET as it is connected to the internet twice a week.

"I've checked that the profile parameter values are used, overwriting local preferences."

Actually the local preferences [if they exist] overwrite the web profile parms -at all times-.

The one way to secure web prefs are used is by hitting the 'Clear' button ** on the local prefs screen, then -not- hit the OK button. What 'Clear' does is delete the global_prefs_override.xml in the BOINC data_dir, which is why you don't want to hit the OK button afterwards [Suspect it could write a new local pref file populated with copy of current web prefs].

** In client 7.6 the button is renamed to 'Use web prefs'.The renamed button also requests a yes/no confirmation explaining what the action does. This exits from the local prefs screens, so there's no chance to accidentally create a new local pref file.

edit: Insert [if they exist]

Re: Is there a limit on tasks in progress? My cruncher is hungry!

Hi Rob,
I've verified. The config file contents the correct setting (identical setting on the both hosts).
Cheers,
Yves
