Don't feel bad, I also had to look at it a couple of times to be sure myself.

I set the game back to the last word that was done according to the rules.
----------------------------------------It's easy - just change one letter. And please check after posting if someone was a few seconds faster. Then you meight Change your post... Thanks. |

Sorry, Thomas Kleinhenn
I posted a German word, because I got slightly frustrated about repeating myself. I deleted the post, because I regretted that outburst |

I'm taking Little mermaid's question here: Is there a restriction to english words with four letters or can one also use other languages? I posted this last year, as a number of people were asking for clarification. The rules since it started here have evolved. 1. Always 4 letters. 2. Change only 1 letter from the previous entry, though letters can be in any order. 3. Word should not appear in the current webpage or preferably in the previous 20 entries. 4. Always check your entry after submitting, in case someone else has submitted since you loaded the thread. 5. Word is in an English dicitionary or encyclopedia. So names / places are allowed. 6. Only 1 entry per submission. 7. Someone else has to submit an entry before you can submit another. 8. Any problems / queries, submit via this thread. 9. If the sequence becomes invalid, submit a note with the correction on the game thread. 10. Keep calm and enjoy. Patrick Patrick ![]() |

I wasn't aware we had this thread, Thomas Kleinhenn, or I could have informed myself before talking
Thank you for the set of rules, Patrick I see that repetitions are OK within certain limits. While I'm at it: - would names such as "John" or "Jane" be acceptable? - would abbreviations, say BEES for Building Energy Efficiency Standards be valid? - would plurals of nouns, say bees for more than one bee or "mice" be valid? - would only the infinitive of verbs do? - would acronyms, say NATO for North Atlantic Treaty Organization or ESTA for Electronic System for Travel Authorization (and a lot of other things) be all right? By the way, this thread is great entertainment - I read it in its entirety and chuckled more than once. |

Well, the most important rule happens to be the last one:
----------------------------------------10. Keep calm and enjoy. I like to add a tad bit of a challenge when I can to what I choose as a response and try to have some sort of connection the last person's word and mine. Something like a connected meaning or a play on words. Eg. carp --> park (so is that a play on car park or is it where a certain kind of teenage fish go to make out? ) Sometimes it would be nice if just changing the order of the letters was ok as long as that was a real word (eg. carp --> crap) but perhaps having to change a letter is for the better. As for your questions, I'd venture that as long as the four letters appear as a word/entry in a dictionary, they would be valid. I'm not inclined to sweat it but that's just me. |

I like to add a tad bit of a challenge when I can to what I choose as a response and try to have some sort of connection the last person's word and mine. So do I. Also, I find it interesting to explore how the language (which in the case of English is my second) tends to evolve rapidly (as does my first language). Words that appear in The Urban Dictionary has not necessarily hit The English Dictionary yet. For me - apart from the recreational value - this game is a way to sharpen my language skills. |
