Since a couple of days, I experienced problem with one of my hosts (up-to-date Ubuntu 10.04 x64, boinc 6.12.33) struggling from time to time with upload and reporting.
----------------------------------------I have two machines with the same configuration (OS, Boinc, profile, etc.) on this Internet connection. - One is usually reporting without problem (excepted once about 5 days ago). - The second one, after successfully reporting for hours, does not succeed anymore to reach the project server (Internet connection OK, project servers maybe temporarily down), until the other hosts at the same location report successfully. My concern is that only a reboot can lock out the situation; manually update/report retry does not help. Currently, this problem occurs more or less every 1 to 1.5 days. The event log does not show any specific error messages, excepted the message mentioned above. Name resolution is setup to OpenDNS servers. I did not experience a similar situation for years (with much older Boinc version and WCG platform at that time). Has anybody an idea about the possible trouble cause(s)? Cheers, Yves |

Why connections go stale remains to be a long standing riddle, particularly when one device on a LAN has this and not the others. These last weeks had the main OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 as primary, and the main Google 8.8.8.8 as secondary server. No complaints in the event logs.
Most happy with 14.04.2 LTS, just updated it's kernel from 3.13 to 3.16.0.31 [Canonical supported]. There's already timelines set out when coming kernels updates/upgrades will take place for this LTS. The next is August, and thereafter planned every 6 months with [Kernel version TBD]. Hoping the next will be 3.18. Clearly you also run on a highly stale 6.12.33 client. Yes, what's not broken should not be messed with, but still, something is broken on your 2 identical Linux-client combos, else this would not happen. As for 10.04 LTS support, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS . Looks like is going to be notted by the time 15.04 appears, i.e. the 5 years is up. |

Hi SekeRob,
----------------------------------------I thank you for your feedback. I'm aware that my Ubuntu config is a little bit "old" and a fresh install based on 14.04 is already pending since a couple of months. Your comment bring me to a possible reason for the trouble. 2 weeks ago, I commissioned a new adsl box because the previous one has been declared being "obsolete" (according to my Internet provider) since 5 years. The new box has an embedded torrent service and I used it for downloading LibreOffice and several Linux ISO images. Since I try to be a "good guy" I agreed to redistribute my downloads and I even increased the ratio from 1.5 to 3 (to 5 for LibreOffice). Because my upload link is only able to support around 900 kb/s, the upload channel is quiet busy since a couple of days, maybe the mentioned host struggle with the poor resulting upload bandwidth. I will take a closer look on this point during the next two days. Regarding OpenDNS, I use the both servers 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222 Cheers, Yves |

Try indeed updating your OS.
----------------------------------------I am using ChaletOS ( https://sites.google.com/site/chaletoslinux/ ) which is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS XFCE but pretty, faster and more Windows like than Ubuntu. if you want to download the 64-Bit version via torrent, I am seeding :) https://sites.google.com/site/chaletoslinux/c...nt?attredirects=0&d=1 I am also using OpenDNS and I have no issues. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

Definitively, I will have to try scheduling a complete update (fresh installation) next week-end.
----------------------------------------I suppose that the last kernel update broke something regarding boinc. The problem is not easy to identify since the host remains connected to Internet without any other troubles @Falconet: I thank you for the advice about ChaletOS, I did not know it. I will add it to my list of "to experiment distro". I would like to collect some experience with Peppermint OS as well, even if I don't plan to use it with cloud services. Cheers, Yves |
