Afternoon all,
I've tried looking around for the BOINC ports that should be open, but there are various different answers. My BOINC client works fine and uploads to the WCG, but periodically, grid.worldcommunitygrid.org (198.20.8.241) is probing a lot of ports on my server: 48331 48332 48362 48399 48401 48430 48431 48497 48517 48524 48541 48540 48546 48568 48572 48569 48571 48568 That's 18 different ports over the course of a few hours. Everything seems to be working normally so can anyone explain what World Community Grid is doing here? This is causing my firewall to block all traffic from WCG all together which is then preventing my work items being uploaded. |

Refer to Help on ports: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSearch.do?searchString=ports
There's a traffic optimization running, but that would only work when the client connects to the servers. The servers are never to initiate a connection in the BOINC concepts. |

But none of the ports that the WCG IP has probed are on that list, so I still can't see why WCG is trying to connect to the above mentioned ports? |

Why these different ports are tested, don't know. Can't seem to find any earlier discussions on 'probing' as you put it, but this first such thread querying this... seemed not to have drawn attention before or caused firewalls to block WCG. |

Here is an earlier thread on probing:

Thanks for that, a 'portscan' discussion... could not get the word off the tip of my tongue ;>) Summary, nothing has changed since when first discussed at start of WCG in 2004, and captured in the traffic Help item link posted above.
Curious how this Alther is still listed with the former Techs title. Would he still have the same access tights ![]() |

In my case, they are established TCP connections, so the source IP is definitely not spoofed.
