A lot of invalid work units.

Hi there,

One of my machines is having a lot of work units declared invalid. The machine is no different than a bunch my other machines (Mac Mini with boinc 7.4.36) but I'm most of its work units are invalid.

I thought, perhaps, the version of boinc was out of date (7.2.42) so I replaced it, but the carnage continues.

I'm sure that the machine and the project have better things to do than crunch work units incorrectly.

Could one of the godlike people take a look at:

OET1_0000466_xEBGP-FA_rig_50901_0
OET1_0000466_xEBGP-FA_rig_65921_0
OET1_0000460_xZAGP-FW_rig_37708_0

and give me an idea of what I might adjust?

10-Q

Re: A lot of invalid work units.

The demigods would probably advise a good hardware diagnostic in such a situation, Memtest86 for starters. Check system temps, maybe the cooler is not seated properly on CPU, running too hot maybe.

Re: A lot of invalid work units.

P.S. With regard to running maybe hot, it's of course superfluous to reference discussion in the often forgotten Dust-bunnies thread. Get them out, 24/7 crunching certainly working to build them up in a couple of months.

Crowd Crunch On.

Heat causing incorrect results without causing any system unreliability?

If you were to say, check your OS version or check your Java/Python/yadda version - sure - I don't buy the heat thing though.

Re: A lot of invalid work units.

My Mac Mini (2009) has the same problem on FAHV. I'm running Darwin 9.8.0 which I suspect is too old.

You don't have to buy anything, maybe, in fact I don't care in the least on or off bit whether you are going to do a hardware test/check or not... entirely up to you cool The possibles were given, bar instability due overclocking and the like, which could generate extra very localized heat too ;>)

Don't know if FAHV was supported for your level of Darwin. Your phrasing suggests you have not run an AD Vina science before with success. You could get a second opinion with running OET1, which uses the same science engine, though I do not know if build on the same version or using the same BOINC APIs.

Re: A lot of invalid work units.

I recall running FAHV work units with success on my Mac Mini before. It was also able to run autodock. First autodock quit working and I switched it off FAAH. I switched it back to FAAAH after autodock work was completed and it resulted in lots of invalids. UGM doesn't run either. As far as I can tell the only things it can run are MCM1 and CEP2.

Per your suggestion SekeRob, I have switched it to OET1. The last time I tried, when the first batch was released, they all ended in error immediately. The first couple I just received seem to be running ok and I will report how they do.

Yes, heat can cause invalids long before any sign of instability. Think of it as a canary in the coal mine.

Re: A lot of invalid work units.

My first OET1 work unit to complete was invalid. The same way as with FAHV.
