Re: Run time way to long

I think the problem is that the initial estimate for the OET tasks is way too short: I've gotten initial estimates in the 1 hour 30 minute range, and when the task's actual run time was more like in the 9 hour 30 minute range... something is wrong there that only time (and the "Task Duration Factor" function of the BOINC client) and/or the programmer of the application can fix...

This, BTW, is on a computer with an Inte£ Core I7 4790 CPU chip.

Ack, it's another Knight!! Grab the Cow-ta-pult, Quick. Where's Patsy?

There is no estimate. These units are totally random and that was expected from the start. Maybe when they get enough results they can start to estimate run times but that is a hope at best.

Re: Run time way to long

but a 6 1/3 times increase in run time from initial estimate (the "Time Remaining" on the Advanced View tasks list, before the task starts) isn't expected by most users...

Not expected - true. But they do use the word "estimate" and if you try to "estimate" on objects which are random I am sure you realize the "estimate" is nothing more than a guess based on the performance of the past WU's. At the moment be prepared to have these units vary wiiiiiiiiidely.

And this project is "opt in" for good reason.

Think of it as a roller-coaster. It's much more fun that way.

As I mentioned in another thread, I had results running for four minutes and for 21 hours at the same time on the same machine. There is no way you can estimate that.

Re: Run time way to long

For those of you who like very quick runtimes, you could check out Find Neglected Diseases at Home (that's the old Fight Malaria at Home). They periodically have work out, and the current batch is averaging less then ten minutes on my 4930k (not overclocked). They are currently running VINA tasks too.

I do both projects, but prefer the shorter run-time, because not all the PCs I've attached operate 24/7

Re: Run time way to long

I also suggest keeping a smaller net buffer. For example, I keep between 1.0 and 0.1.

*Cue being without internet for 4 days. Let`s take a -huge- gamble with estimated times, deadlines and a 5 day buffer.

Re: Run time way to long

I have some quad core tablets dedicated to WCG.
I have 30+ years credit for FA@H. The badges
recognize 20, 50, 100 years. So, I need to run
only FA@H until I get 50 years credit before FA@H
concludes.

If the badges recognized every 10 years of credit,
I'ld gladly turn OET on much sooner.
