WCG & ASIC Computers?

The latest version of the official Boinc software supports ASIC computers, those computers that are used to mine BitCoin and AltCoin like LiteCoin and the sort. Does World Community Grid, or will World Community Grid support ASIC computers to complete task for their projects?

Re: WCG & ASIC Computers?

Short answer is no.

Long answer is still no. ASIC stands for Application Specific Integrated Circuit. This means a chip would need to be designed and sold that did the specific calculations that are needed for the science applications. Since this is a volunteer community, people are not in the market to build a chip that would solve for the projects we have. The examples you gave for those that use it, are for profit. People buy ASIC devices to increase their payouts, but those devices are only good for doing those calculations and thats it.

Thanks,

Thanks! I guess WCG won't have it, but Boinc supports it though, so if I ever come around to it.. I'll support a project that would make use of it. If not, I'll just sell the darn thing. :)

There is a Boinc project that uses them. Bitcoin Utopia.
