Parallel Operations

In my favourite book "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy" I can read:
"The plans for destroying the earth had been published for 50 years on Alpha Centauri.
When Prostetnik Vogon Jeltz recognized that mankind has never been on that star he was indignant that mankind doesn't mind about their own business."

At that time I had the impression that Prostetnik Vogon Jeltz was a little bit snotty and I hoped that no one on the earth will behave in such a manner.

Now some years later I recognized that the behaviour of Prostetnik Vogon Jeltz is well known and practiced perfectly:

Some little changes and the analogy is obvious:
"destroying the earth" has to be replaced by "Maintenance underway"
and
"Alpha Centauri" has to be replaced by "facebook / twitter"

Just like in the book as well in reality there are some persons who don't (want to) have access to "Alpha Centauri" respectively "facebook / twitter". Therefore the published information "Maintenance" could not be recognized.
Ok, not the earth was destroyed but no new file downloads could be done.

I will appreciate the fact if the next maintenance is announced via email or on your homepage.

Re: Parallel Operations

Also, like every other BOINC project, a few words in the Notices section of the Client would have been nice

GPUGrid talk a lot in there as do Primegrid announcing the latest discovery of some new big number not divisible by any of the numbers that precede it

bahasu you know the answer you are going to get "but you're not going to like it" from Deep Thought.....

Re: Parallel Operations

Hi,

bahasu you know the answer you are going to get "but you're not going to like it" from Deep Thought.....

The right answer may be 42.

The right behaviour will be good fo(u)r two groups:
- the cruncher will earn more points
- the scientist will get more results and can create more drugs against disease.

Re: Parallel Operations

The outage was announced in the news section of the website and a notice was received in my BOINC client on the 4th February.
I agree an email would be very good.

Re: Parallel Operations

I didn't get one in mine and yet I have 3 GPUGrid's still showing the oldest from 13th Jan

One letting me know the best level of Graphics driver, One letting me know they are going to cease support of now quite old inefficient graphics cards and one to warn me that they have unleashed a batch of WU's that may take a long time to complete

All useful comms and all demonstrating there's someone behind the scenes who cares about my contribution to their project. A nice human touch

I understand the WCG update had a unknown end time but it would have been nice to know of progress along the way - I also understand that running around panicking under enormous stress is the stuff of upgrades, all too aware. However even the facebook page wasn't forthcoming on progress after a prolonged outage. Reassurances like we'll be back soon. Stage 1 replacement of the servers is complete. We're now on with the database restore. We're verifying the new functionality... would have all helped pacify the general concern after a 14+ hour outage.

Re: Parallel Operations

I get outage notices in my client after the outages are well over. I didn't get an outage notice in my app for the latest one. Instead I got one for Jan 17th.

I don't mind that much mind you. I had lots of work (another day or two) and I know my numbers will be counted eventually.
