BOINC Manager is "unable to connect to the core client" on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5

I have installed BOINC (boinc-client and boinc-manager packages) 7.2.33 (x64) from the official software repository on my RHEL 6.5 laptop. I have followed the instructions given in the WCG web site carefully and, to try fix this problem, I have completely removed and re-installed the packages a few times, always using the system package manager (RPM)

When I run the BOINC Manager from Computer -> More Applications I should be presented with my WCG projects and I should be allowed to edit my Computing Preferences through the provided dialogs. Instead, the message "Unable to connect to the core client" steadily appears in the BOINC Manager's Simple View's main window and the word "Disconnected" is shown in the Advanced View's status bar.

So I have tried to log in manually:

  • I have switched to Advanced View
  • I have clicked on the Advanced pull-down menu and there on Select Computer.
  • I have entered my laptop's hostname and my Account Key from my WCG profile

But still no connection: the BOINC Manager still says "disconnected" with no further details.

When I try selecting Advanced -> Event Log all I get is an empty winddow. And I see no "error log" option to help debugging: Nor do I know where to look for a clue...

I have searched in the WCG Help pages and in this forum: some users seem to have experienced similar issues in Fedora and in RHEL, but none of the suggestions that worked for them seem to apply to my instance Or, of course, I may be overlooking something...

Note that I have successfully installed the Linux Ubuntu BOINC packages on my Ubuntu 14.04 home desktop, smoothly and out-of-the-box!

I read about the possibility for a firewall software to be blocking communication. But I have no evidence of my laptop being "firewalled": I see just Symantec Antivirus and no reference to any firewalls in the ISAM tool.

Please, does anyone have hints to resolve this bothering issue?
Many thanks in advance for any feedback.

Michele Milano

Have a look at this page especially the section:
"Set up your accounts" & "use the recommended procedure"
This will set your permissions correctly and allow the Manager to connect to the Client.
This works for Centos and Scientific Linux also.

Good Luck good luck

Me too. I have Mageia 4 and I have installed Boinc from the repository, the last version, and I have the message Unable to connect to the core client.

If I start:
$ boincmgr --verbose

I get the message:
11:55:26 PM: catalog file for domain 'BOINC-Web' not found.
/usr/bin/boinc: line 5: /var/log/boinc.log: Permission denied
/usr/bin/boinc: line 5: /var/log/boinc.log: Permission denied

Re: BOINC Manager is "unable to connect to the core client" on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5

OK: now my BOINC Manager connects to my local BOINC client as intended.

I had properly completed "nearly all" of the recommended configuration. So, apparently, what was causing my problem was that I was not completed the permission-related steps listed in the Recommended procedure::
Enter the following commands in a terminal, as root:

  • /usr/sbin/usermod -G boinc -a username
  • chmod g+rw /var/lib/boinc
  • chmod g+rw /var/lib/boinc/*.*
  • ln -s /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg /home/username/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
  • Finally, logout and login again so that your new group membership takes effect.

The first time I executed the above steps, with the commands prefixed by "SUDO", nothing seemed to have changed. So

  • I completely removed BOINC through command:
    sudo yum remove boinc-client boinc-manager

  • I reinstalled BOINC using the standard RHEL's "Add/Remove software" tool
  • I added the above permission steps. At that point the connection problem had gone!

Despite the above success, I am still unable to execute WCG work units using this BOINC client in my Red Hat Enterprise Linux IBM-provided workstation: now I can't get BOINC Manager to use the standard WCG Account Manager! When, following the instructions, I enter the URL http://worldcommunitygrid.org and my password on that site. I get message "This acocunt Manager cannot be added. Please try again later." I have tried now and again over the last few weeks, with the very same outcome each time. I have also tried variants of the WCG Account Manager's URL. But no luck!

I do know that, instead of pointing BOINC to an account manager, I could add individual WCG projects manually to it. But that would mean creating one separate accounts and passwords for each and every WCG project. I really have no time and patience to do it!

In conclusion, despite my hopes and expectations, it turns out that BOINC can't be used out-of-the-box in my Linux workstation. This I believe, is counter-productive for an open-source, cross-platform software intended to be used worldwide by the highest possible number of standard users as possible.

For the moment I have no extra time left to struggle with this new issue. So I have no other choice but giving up. If and when my work will allow for it, I'll return to this struggle in the next weeks, or months, or years... Who can tell it?

Thank you anyway for your feedbacks.
Regards.

Michele.

There's no such thing as a WCG account manager. You -add- WCG with the http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org url as a project via the BOINC manager or via the boinccmd tool and choose the sub-projects aka researches on the website via Settings > Device Manager > Device Profile > Default.

Re: BOINC Manager is "unable to connect to the core client" on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5

Rob,

this is good to be known, and thank you very much for pointing me to the right direction! I have selected to add a project instead of an account manager and, voila! my BOINC client has started being fed with new work.

I'm not completely sure, but I believe that I found a note about adding WCG as an account manager somewhere in the web. Now I know that it was incorrect, or misleading information.

Anyway, I wouldn't have spent so much time browsing around if I had found complete and consistent directions in the official World Community Grid site. But, unfortunately, the Download page in the WCG site looks more like a patchwork from different authors than a clear, consistent, essential yet complete step-by-step tutorial for general users.

Luckily, I finally landed to this forum and, thanks to the guys who shared their tips with me, my journey is over.

Many, many thanks to you all! I wish you all the best.

Michele
