Re: Temperature Controlled BOINC?

Hi guys, bringing this topic from the depths...

Why?
Recently I've put TThrottle on all laptops on which WCG is crunching (mom's, dad's, 4 or mine's, etc.). All my desktops work on 100%, except an old one...that one needs TThrottle.

So I've put 7.30 version for WinXP on that computer...but the file cputemperature.sys crashes my computer every time I start the TThrotle.
Has anyone had similar problem? :/

Copy of my reply to you on Einstein@home (in case you look here first):

I've only used TThrottle since my PC's were migrated to Win7, so I cannot speak to how it behaves on XP. I did a quick Google, with a variety of search terms, and didn't find anything specific to TThrottle and XP. I did find more than one mention of cputemperature.sys, and .sys files in general, misbehaving when there was an "unexpected" change in hardware and/or associated drivers. Also, found that corruption of the install package/files could cause this problem with a .sys file.

Thx, I've seen it!

But no response from the Fred...& I would like to prepared for the summertime in Croatia! So with TThrottle I've put the thermal on 85% of the Tjunc for the CPUs on laptops!

This old system on good old ABIT BP6 worries me...don't know if it would work after the summertime... cool

Re: Temperature Controlled BOINC?

Just reduce the number of cores crunching. In the summer, I drop mine in half or more depending on how hot it is outside. Immediate results. You lose some crunching time but you generate less heat and use less electricity. Drop one at a time to see how low you want to go.

Re: Temperature Controlled BOINC?

SOLUTION:
As listed here: [url]http://efmer.com/forum/index.php?topic=1218.0[/url]
TThrottle needs a CPU with internal sensor...so that is P4 of newer processor! ;)

The strange thing is: when I put TThrottle into action on all my laptops...my grid boosted from 107 to 109Gflops! Nice... ;)

Re: Temperature Controlled BOINC?

An old adage 'correlation is not causation'. As GFL is derived from points [which system is kind of very seriously broken], it's very bold to make such a conclusion ;>)

Re: Temperature Controlled BOINC?

Measuring internal CPU temperature is often a tricky thing. There are several CPUs (generations) which do not properly report their internal temperatures because of inaccuracy, or flawed thermal sensors. More details here: http://www.hwinfo.com/forum/Thread-CPU-Core-T...-Measuring-Facts-Fictions
So sometimes (especially for later AMD CPUs) one cannot rely on the internal CPU temperature values. I have seen lots of AMD CPUs reporting erratic values like 1 C for example...

I think the best practice is to reduce the amount of CPU cores used during hot days.

Re: Temperature Controlled BOINC?

There's the old ThreadMaster GUI [Windows only thru 8.1 **] ... superb in slowing down the number of cycles -any- app is allowed to use. Some sciences work a CPU/FPU harder than others, where this tool can actually throttle at individual science app level [See FAQs].

** Will probably work on W10 too.

you should have tell that to Fred (developer of TThrottle)...maybe he would include the MBO sensors also then! biggrin

@SekeRob
What I noticed that some (NOT ALL) laptops speed up from default 80% (on which I put all laptops) to 100% CPU TThrottling...some got down to 60%...some are kept on 80%...

So no, it's not just "blind assumption"! But also the colder days in Europe that we experience... cool

btw, all computers are set to work up to 85% of Tj!
yours?

I have already offered him a full integration of HWiNFO sensor values (all temperatures, fan speeds, voltages, power values, etc) into BoincTasks. He liked that idea, but he was quite busy to implement it yet.

that would be great...'cause it would work around my problem with no temp.sensor on CPU...

maybe he will, one day?! wink
