Re: Philae has landed!

It's anyway amazing there was enough gravity to make it 'fall back' after the first bounce, as much as actually able to make Rosetta keep circling that tumbling duck of cohesive rubble for quite a few AU's **

** AU defined as exactly 149597870700 meters (about 150 million kilometers, or 93 million miles) biggrin

Re: Philae has landed!

OSIRIS is just about to go up in 8 hours or so, reaching for the next asteroid, Bennu, that actually could hit earth in the coming century http://science.nasa.gov/missions/osiris-rex/ (dubious sums in that link) and https://www.nasa.gov/osiris-rex. Travel there, study, sneak up, snort samples, fly back to earth.

Not quite in the century...more like in 160y or later:

Always check NEO, before posting anything about Asteroids...use it a lot to keep calm people, when newspapers write idiotic articles about non-existent threat to Earth!

Re: Philae has landed!

Could your English reading skills be wanting?... 'in the coming century' means, we're now in the 21st, and it potentially happening in the 22nd!

Re: Philae has landed!

thks for clarification Sekerob and KLIK
all this is justified when you see how the media are exploiting common people's fears
see CCN :NASA launches spacecraft to intercept asteroid

and say at the beginning "potentially dangerous asteroid called Bennu."

at the end of Rosetta mission -crash due end sept- we may open a thread titled OSIRIS-Rex the Savior wink

anyway following Rosetta till that end....

Re: Philae has landed!

In the department of "you have to think of everything", the 19km approach was done at walking pace, cameras were switched to low resolution, to maximize data transmission observations till the last moment AND Rosetta was powered off 5 meters before touchdown, so as the prevent it sending signal /noise into space after RIP. They managed to collect 200MB worth of data till then. hypnotized
