Is it just me or does anyone else think that recruitment badges is at the very least in poor taste, or at worst an offensive idea ?
People who need to be persuaded to join the World Community Grid are not likely to be useful long term participants - most of the people who want to contribute will have already done so. I know this because I have told everyone I know about distributed computing before these recruitment badges were introduced (and to be honest most either don't care, don't trust a new program, or don't know how it works, or how it will impact their computer performance). It would be MUCH more effective to try and encourage businesses (with large unused processing power). World Community Grid is an IBM initiative - go get em guys (and we the users will give YOU badges/kudos/thumbs up instead of the other way around). I run my PC 24/7 to support a cause I find worthy - NOT for rewards/recognition/badges/kudos/rankings/thumbs up/milestones (or other pointless acknowledgements). I am at a point where I would have left this project a long time ago if it wasn't for the simple fact that it does good work - but the constant emails/self promotions/news updates in my BOINC client really annoys me. |

I'm not offended in the least. Many DC'ers don't even bother trying to recruit. If this gets a few to do it, it is a positive thing. I have tried getting both individuals and businesses to join up. Same results. So, I think efforts are spent well to get its community involved just as much as them putting the efforts directly. At least the flood of info is getting it out to more people now.

CZ, if you believe we are sending you too much information, you can change those settings on the website by visiting this page.
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewNewsPreference.action It allows you to choose what news/information you receive. The decision on how much information gets to you and where, is something you can set. Also, thanks for your feedback on the recruitment badges. There are some users who actively seek out badges for their work, thus the first post usually made after the researchers welcome message is a badge hunting post. Again badges are just for fun, we are mainly about the science here and if badges help us get more runtime from members or new members who may not have been a member before, then it is a step in the right direction. Thanks, -Uplinger |

The main reason I'm supporting wcg is science. I'm very interested in the projects hosted/supported by wcg. That's my main motivation.
----------------------------------------But: I love to have these badges. For me it is challenging planning how to distribute my limited ressources to the different projects. My goal is to reach at least 5 years on each active project. Better 10 or more years. So I have to look on the planned project duration and so on to make my individual plan how I can achieve my personal goals. It would be easier if I would concentrate on a single project. But for me all current projects are very important to me for different reasons. So either I decide to mark all projects in my profile as active and let it run. Or I have some fun in deciding on my own which project is getting which ressources. My current plan for the next months is: Bring FAH to 10 years with my androids. Bring MCM1 to 5 years. Bring UGM1 to 5 years. Bring CEP2 to 5 years. When these goals are reached I continue: to bring MCM1 to 10 years. to bring UGM1 to 10 years. to bring FAH to 20 years. In total this should take one year from now. ![]() |

And he is saying that he runs his environment 24/7 because he founds it worthy and not for rewards, badges and a lot more he mentioned...

Is it just me or does anyone else think that recruitment badges is at the very least in poor taste, or at worst an offensive idea ? No, I do not find the recruitment badges offensive in any manner.People who need to be persuaded to join the World Community Grid are not likely to be useful long term participants - most of the people who want to contribute will have already done so. No, not true at all. I have just found a coworker who just found out about the WCG (I didn't recruit him) and is very enthusiastic about participating. So there are people out there that would be enthusiastic crunchers, but haven't heard the "word" yet.I know this because I have told everyone I know about distributed computing before these recruitment badges were introduced (and to be honest most either don't care, don't trust a new program, or don't know how it works, or how it will impact their computer performance). Yes, most of those that have tried to spread the word about WCG have run in to these situations. It would be MUCH more effective to try and encourage businesses (with large unused processing power). World Community Grid is an IBM initiative - go get em guys (and we the users will give YOU badges/kudos/thumbs up instead of the other way around). Yes. that would help also and there are businesses that do participate. I run my PC 24/7 to support a cause I find worthy - NOT for rewards/recognition/badges/kudos/rankings/thumbs up/milestones (or other pointless acknowledgements). That's great that you participate because you realize that the effort is worthy... but not everybody here is as altruistic as you. There are crunchers who give a rats arse about if it's altruistic, worthy or good for mankind... the only thing that they care about is the badges and the competition it stands for. Between both camps, the job gets done.So... hang in there, have fun and enjoy. CJSL Crunching for a better world... |
