the case against bread

Now, one doctor says we can prevent Alzheimer's altogether by changing our diets.

Perlmutter says Americans should also be eating very few carbs, just 60 to 80 grams a day.

"For more than 99 percent of our time on this planet, we were on a high fat, low carb, virtually gluten-free diet," Perlmutter said.

Perlmutter says carbs cause a blood sugar spike. A recent study showed even small increases in blood sugar up the risk of dementia and Type 2 diabetics have doubled the risk of Alzheimer's. Another study found the risk of dementia was 42 percent lower in those who consumed a higher fat, lower carb diet.

Re: the case against bread

I measure my own blood sugar several times a day. The biggest and most unwanted spike is caused by breakfast which takes the body from seven or so hours of fasting to an instant large carbs (= sugar) load.

I took bread out of my diet completely last week after two slices of hot buttered toast were spiking my breakfast blood glucose levels too high. A week later my body fat levels are slowly decreasing, and I have more energy. (I'm not diabetic) But boy, I miss hot buttered toast and marmalade.

More home experimentation with low GI foods gives immediate results for me. Leaving out processed foods is also a big help.

The other 'immediate relief' in blood glucose levels for me has between to reduce portion size to a half, or to the point where I'm still very slightly hungry after meals. This keeps the blood glucose levels in the 'normal' range and keeps me energetic.

(Brazil nuts and walnuts are a great low GI between meals snack.)

I'm of the opinion that belly fat is the mark of an early, diseased and miserable death . (I'm not a medical doctor.)

Re: the case against bread

Interesting article.

FWIW, in January this year I decided to lose weight as I'd ballooned to almost 23 stones (322 lbs) I cut out all bread, potatoes, fried food, fast food, curries, and sugar. I gave up alcohol almost 5 years ago. (Apart from a couple of special occasions)

Replaced what I used to eat with chicken, fish, salads and lots of fruit and veg.

I've lost 5 stones (70 lbs) and feel wonderful. I recently had to have some blood tests done, and the doctor remarked how good my cholesterol & blood sugar levels are now. The doc & I then had a long chat about obesity & bad eating habits in general, and how the 'civilised' world is heading towards a heath catastrophe, purely because of what we eat. A few lifestyle changes can save us a whole heap of trouble in later life.

Now, if only I could stop smoking...

So try to eat healthy... ;)
And when you use food supplements, try to take as natural as they can get...

"Now, if only I could stop smoking..."

Look at the stats for kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma.) It's not a great disease to have.

I stopped in three days by dumping my usual brand, and buying a brand that tasted awful, a pack of extra large nicotine patches and a lot of apples and soft mints. Then I cut ten of the smokes in half, threw away the top halves and the rest of the pack and limited myself to three half-smokes a day, plus nicotine patches, plus fruit and candy to replace the Pavlovian nicotine 'reward.'

Worked well. By the end of Day Three the stench from the ashtray actually becomes revolting. No smokes since, and that was five years ago.

There's a BBC news piece today, that almost half of the UK population is on meds of some kind. (50% women, 43% men.) Astonishing news.
