Tasks per processor core

I just purchased a new computer with a i7-4790 processor. After installing BOINC I noticed that 8 tasks were running for the first 24 hours and now it is down to 4. My question is: do more tasks/day get completed with more tasks running or do fewer tasks get completed faster so there is no net gain? If more simultaneous tasks get completed faster is there a setting to make this happen?
Thank you

Re: Tasks per processor core

Did you disable Hyperthreading?
The workunits you have done, any errors?

Can you post the first 50 lines of the event log?

Ideally you'll want all 8 tasks running for the most number of work units completed. Selecting only 4 cores active will speed up the individual work unit run times by around 30%, but less total work will get done because you have half the core count.

Make sure hyperthreading is enabled (you can verify by doing a quick ctrl-alt-del select task manager and go to performance tab you should see 8 graphs for cpu usage.

In Boinc tools, computing preferences, processor usage tab, select "on multiprocessor systems, use (100%) of the processors, and use at most (100%) of cpu time. This will ensure your CPU is doing the most work possible.

Re: Tasks per processor core

Thank you for the help. The performance monitor tab only shows 4 graphs so I got into BIOS setup and was surprised to see that hyperthreading IS enabled. Any suggestions?

Re: Tasks per processor core

OK! The computer is running on all 8 'cylinders' now. I had to get into msconfig and uncheck the box for the number of processors.
Thanks, again
