BOINC Reference

Hello,

I noticed there is almost no reference to BOINC on your mainpages.
Even when invited to download "the software" necessary to run WCG, no mention about BOINC or its crunchers community.

I noticed this as I was reading an this article about WCG. (see below)

IBM is clearly stated as "offering computing power", but NOT A WORD about the thousands of crunchers helping WCG (and IBM) to achieve such a computation power confused sad

How comes ?

http://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-busine...rnment-environment-agency

IBM offers free supercomputing hours on its World Community Grid for researchers who are studying climate change in support of the latest iteration of the White House’s Climate Data Initiative.

I really don't understand this unfair situation.

Best,

Philippe cool

Re: BOINC Reference

IMHO BOINC is a tool. If a reader has landed on the WCG homepage possibly folowing a link such as that in the Guardian article why confuse them by muddying the waters with references to BOINC and it's myriad of different projects. Everything a prospective new cruncher needs is on offer from WCG. Publicising BOINC as a seperate community serves no purpose.

IBM is clearly stated as "offering computing power", but NOT A WORD about the thousands of crunchers helping WCG (and IBM) to achieve such a computation power

Regretable though it maybe that the article makes no mention of the thousands of crunchers helping WCG it is not a criticism that should be directed at WCG rather at the articles author.

Re: BOINC Reference

A simple reference to BOINC and the crunchers community would be sufficient. But OK. I understand. WCG consider that a reader that has landed on its homepage is too stupid to understand he will need to use a software called BOINC to participate.

If the article makes no mention of the BOINC community, it's only because IBM / WCG did not mention it originaly.

I even don't understand I can still be surprised.

If the BOINC community is not important, why is WCG sending " Recruit your friends to power scientific research" emails ?????

As World Community Grid gets close to celebrating 10 years of advancing scientific research, we're excited to continue growing our community. Help us get there by inviting your friends to join World Community Grid today!

To recognize your efforts, we're piloting new recruitment badges. You only need to recruit 5 friends to earn your first badge, so get started today!

PS - Shh! Please don't discuss these badges with other World Community Grid members in the forums during the pilot. Thanks!

Thanks for all your support,
The World Community Grid Team

Re: BOINC Reference

Being part of the BOINC community is important to us and our relationship with the Berkley team that leads that community is not something we take for granted.

When we are contacted by journalists for a story, we typically provide standard information about the program, which includes information about World Community Grid running on the BOINC open-source platform. But we have no control over how such information is used or how these articles are edited.

When we issue our own press releases, we typically include a statement crediting BOINC (see example).

As for our website, the BOINC logo appears on the website's footer. As for downloading the software, depending on the operating system, the volunteer might be downloading the BOINC client, or the World Community Grid version instead. From a new volunteer's perspective, the experience should be seamless regardless, rather than cause potential confusion over software versions.

Re: BOINC Reference

Phil1966, apparently you are very upset with WCG (and IBM? not sure) for not indicating that BOINC software is being used? There is a link at the bottom of the homepage that will take you to the BOINC home page (just like the IBM link on the other side of the page). As for the article, take your anger out on the author (WCG and/or IBM didn't write the article). Also, with full knowledge that this a forum that is mainly in English, you wrote in French (hiding something?) and that is plain rude. Between online translators that I used, it appears that you are so upset that you will not crunch anymore for WCG (I hope I'm wrong, but you do have that right). But if it is true, do think you are teaching WCG a lesson? or are you depriving a cancer patient of a cure? Wouldn't it have been better just to have made a comment/suggestion in the Suggestion/Feedback forum ?
