Unbuntu 14 on AWS (Resolved)

I am trying out WCG on an amazon web service EC2 machine. The image used is Ubuntu 14 server x64. BOIC was installed and the project has been attached, however the WU does not seem to be processing. This machine has been running for 24 hours, and the state of the task is below. I am also testing an EC2 machine with Win Server 2008 and it is processing fine. Does anyone have any experience with AWS/Linux with this issue?

Re: Unbuntu 14 on AWS

Says 'state: downloading'. Here the much more interesting is the full startup event log through where the messages show the job has been started / should be started. Memory allowance, disk space allowance etc. Normally downloading would not even commence if the minima are not met to run a job. Of course, things as 'while computer is in use' must be ticked, else precessing would not start on shared machines, but that's a guess. Maybe visit the ripple lab teams forums. They have all the experience at running ec2's. There could be discussion logged there.

Re: Unbuntu 14 on AWS

Hi Paul,

1. In the profile you have associated with EC2 VM try to increase "Suspend work if CPU usage is above" to "100%"

2. Then try this commands in your SSH client:

boinccmd --set_run_mode always

boinccmd --set_network_mode always

boinccmd --file_transfer http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ retry

boinccmd --project http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ update

3. If they wouldn't help, reboot your VM and hit

boinccmd --get_messages seqno

Copy and paste your event log you have to receive after running it.

Cheers good luck

Re: Unbuntu 14 on AWS

Thanks Branjo,

The "set_network_mode always" is what fixed it. The state has changed to "downloaded" and the CPU is running at 100%.

AWS is offering 1 year free for 2 instances (1 linux and 1 Win) which is why I'm testing this.

Re: Unbuntu 14 on AWS [resolved]

FYI for everyone else, the agent will always suspend networking when boinc computing is interrupted. The message/event log would have told helpers the actual state such as 'network suspend because of xyz'. Networking usually does not suspend on it's own unless you've set a daily/weekly schedule or a bandwidth budget.

Hi Paul,
Glad you got it sorted.
Please post the results of your tests in the Cloud Server Comparison Thread peace

Re: Unbuntu 14 on AWS

Thanks again for all the help. I am just getting around to learning Linux.

@sunfolk
The free instances are the t2.micro which have variable performance. I plan on trying a spot request of c3.xlarge on Linux for a month to see the performance, more from a curiosity standpoint. Once I do I will post the results. I prefer and enjoy building my machines, however living in place that never snows heat output is a consideration.
