From a technical standpoint is there any danger to a processor if its running at 100% most of the day everyday without a break? I am running an I5 4570 Quad Core. The max temperature I have managed to hit is 66 degrees C. (150 F). (since solving a major cooling issue :) But even right now as I type this up I am at 100% and only hitting a package temp (of 59 to 61 degrees C. Individual core temperatures are comparable. Basically what I am wondering is will keeping the processor at this level for lets say months or more gradually ware it out or will that only occur if it overheats?

Malander,
You will get lots of different opinions about this, so I will just tell you of my experience. Since WCG started I have run my processors flat out, 24/7. Whether single core, duos, quads or octos I have never had a cpu failure. I do not monitor the temperature and even have a couple of quads in my garage where the ambient often reaches 100 deg F. The only problems I have had were with laptops that will overheat, but they will shut down without any damage. I don't use them for crunching anymore. So good luck and keep on crunching. |

I never any issues with running the CPU's at 100% on all cores, be it laptops or desktops.

The only things that will hurt a CPU are temperature and voltage. Keep it at stock voltage unless you know what you are doing and with good cooling it will last basically forever. Chances are that the other components of your computer (motherboard, power supply, etc) will die long before the actual CPU. Nothing to worry about!

The official maximum temperature for the I5 4570 is 72,72 degrees C. But any official limit stated by the manufacturer is always a very, very cautious one. So not to worry if you exceed it by a couple of degrees. It's is not going to explode at 75. I bet some people run it at 80 degrees or above for years without any problems.

Thanks everyone, This processor has hit 100C (before I started back with WCG. Needless to say I took care of that issue :)

The official maximum temperature for the I5 4570 is 72,72 degrees C. This is the max temperature at top of the CPU (Integrated Heat Spreader / IHS). The internal max temperature Tj,max is higher, usually 90-105 C. You need to take this into account when measuring various temperatures (core/DST and socket). When the CPU reaches Tj,max it starts to throttle. If that doesn't help, it shuts down. The most common opinion when running 24/7 is to limit temperatures to < 70-75 C. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Mumak at Aug 5, 2014 8:40:59 PM] |

Same here as Deltavee. The only thing I do is to blow the dust out of the heatsinks once a year.
