too many devices profiled

is there anyway to modify my device profiles? After troubles with cranky computers and ISPs then moving back to Canada from the USA, I've ended up with 3 different device profiles that actually describe the same CPU through different incarnations of wiping and reloading the operating system on my computer. At this rate, I'm going to look like I'm running a computer lab, when I only have the one desktop computer...

Editing Device Profiles

Sure thing, Dreamshaper!

Click on My Grid, then on Device Manager. Then click on a Device Name. Then look at the drop down menu labelled Current Assigned Device Profile. It shows the current named profile for that device. If you like, you can click the down arrow and see a list of all your named profiles, allowing you to select a different named profile. To the right is the control labelled Edit Device Profile. Click on that, then select the named profile you want to modify. Edit the profile, then click on Save at the bottom. Remember, nothing is really changed until you click on Save. If you get confused, just back out, then start all over again on the unchanged profile. If the profile you edit is the one you have selected as Current Assigned Device Profile, then your local Agent will download it with the next work unit. Nothing will change on your computer before it returns the result and gets a new work unit. Be sure the profile names are distinctive, so that when you look at your local Agent, you realize which profile it is running. For example, VACATION and NORMAL and HOLIDAY.

Any questions?

Re: Editing Device Profiles

confused i don't think that's what he meant. there seems to be a misunderstanding based on terms (profiles and devices are not interchangable in this group although many people use them that way)

many of us have had to reinstall the wcg program because of system problems (most notably for me was the sp2 fiasco). when we started it up we were given credit for another machine on our device list even though the machine was given the same name. in my case i have one cpu that now has credit for seven devices. none of these devices has produced any results in over four months (although the final one has continously produced results). there is no way to get rid of these phantom devices on our list at the present time.

in previous threads we were told that they would roll off of the device list after 14 days of inactivity, and while that is true of the display, it still lists them to our account. there should be a way for us to delete devices that are no longer within our control or have been replaced.

i realize that in the scope of human suffering this is not a big deal, but for some of us more anal (can i say that on this forum?) types having things accurate is important. wink

Re: Editing Device Profiles

The old device name stays on the database as part of the audit trail they have. I too like things nice and neat, however, Removing the older names is not something that can be done. I've picked up the habbit of naming my systems placing an 'a' (or other letter) designation after the device name. helps me track how many times I've upset and had to reload my computer. biggrin Got one system reported as 'c' now. laughing

Re: Editing Device Profiles

Yes,

I find this "feature" really annoying, too. I've adopted the habit of naming all my non-current device installations as "defunct" which at least is self-explanatory when viewing the device list! My list credits me with 26 devices, although I only have 23 computers.

Re: Editing Device Profiles

Well the nice thing about it is that after a few days, the "defunct" ones are filtered off the default list. biggrin Couple more days, and one of my 'B' entries wont be shown unless I ask for it.

( laughing Still laughing about "defunct" naming... smile Good one peace

Re: Editing Device Profiles

On the subject of deciding which device to rename "defunct",

If you look at the preferences tab of the agent, there is a Device ID number as well as a Device Name. Presumably the Device ID is unique, whereas the Device Name can be a duplicate.

I can't see the Device ID listed anywhere in My Grid under Device Manager, and I wonder if anyone knows if there is a way to display it?

Thanks,
David.

You are correct. We track devices by their device ID, but allow users to give them a name for easy identification. Each new registration automatically creates a new device ID. You can't see the device id directly on the Device Manager/Statistics page, but you can see it indirectly.

If you go to your Device Manager or Device Statistics page and hover over the device name, the device id is encoded in the URL, which you can see in the status bar of your browser.
