BOINC system tray icon and service question

Dear All,

I have a question regarding "hidden running" of BOINC client on PCs.

My aim is to install BOINC Client on PCs and to "always run" it (autorun after PC restart) without user interaction.

I've installed BOINC as a service. Connected it to WCG. In Options I have unchecked V from "Run manager on startup".

Is it right? How can I be shure that after PC restart BOINC client starts as service automatically and begin to work (with no system tray icon)?

Re: BOINC system tray icon and service question

If you select "Service install" and de-select "Allow all users..." you should get what you are looking for : BOINC will automatically start sometime during the booting procedure, and since a normal user will not be allowed to run BOINC Manager there should not be any tray icon.

Please confirm the latter since I am a Linux-only for many years now. smile

For admin users who can run BOINC manager the tray icon should be there as usual.

Re: BOINC system tray icon and service question

Ok, I have installed BOINC as Service on new PC and disselected Allow all users...
BOINC automatically starts alsoi in system tray.
I have disabled "Run BOINC manager at startup"... and the question remains the same - how can i know that it is running (if there is no tray icon)?
In processes - there is only boinctray.exe (even after restart, when there no icon in tray).

Re: BOINC system tray icon and service question

To check if it is running with no Systray icon, start task manager and if CPU is 100% then it is running wink

Re: BOINC system tray icon and service question

BOINC automatically starts also in system tray.
When you see the systray icon are you logged as a plain user or as a user with Admin authority?

When a plain user you should ignore everything about BOINC and logically there should be no tray icon (but BOINC implementation is not always perfectly logical wink ).

When an admin user there should be the BOINC tray icon and simply hovering it should show you the name and percentage of the running tasks. And, if you need, its menu offers you to start BOINC Manager.

Experienced users, please do not hesitate to correct me if I am no longer up-to-date or if my memory fools me, since I have not run BOINC under Windows for a long while. smile

Re: BOINC system tray icon and service question

Just experimented. If you install as a service, clear the All users and ensure you have cleared Start manager at log-in........then when machine boots up and you log-in as Admin there is NO SIGN of Boinc in the Systray. As I stated above as a reply, the easiest way to see if it is running is to see the 100% wink

Re: BOINC system tray icon and service question

How about running it from the Start Menu / Start Screen? My WCG version 7.2.47 shows up as "World Community Grid - BOINC Manager".
Or run it from e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\BOINC\boincmgr.exe"?

To answer the OP's question:
