MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) VIRUS

It's recently in the news. A deadly virus.
Is there anything WCG can do to help find a vaccine?

I think that's something to ask the researcher's.

We're here when they need our help.

Re: MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) VIRUS

I have been struggling with my new Windows 8.1 computer. I am finally getting the upper hand but I have not been doing any deep searches on the news. The MERS coronavirus seems new. It will have to be crystallized before xray diffraction analysis can create a computer model for in silico testing. I have not checked, but I doubt anybody hasa proper computer model yet.

No idea what that means (no compliant on you're part Lawrence, it just means I have to go Google it biggrin). Anyway... that is what we are here for... MERS, SARS, etc. These should be the diseases that the WCG crunches in the future. I'm ready, bring it on !!! wink

PS: "in silico": is an expression used to mean "performed on computer or via computer simulation." (I'm getting there... slowly but surely)

WCG crunch what they are given, not what they or we want! It is the researchers outside of WCG who provide! wink

Yeah, Alan, I know that... I guess it was my subconscious that was expressing it's wishful thinking biggrin.

Yes, I also wish to see more projects to help.
MERS has been described as a deadlier cousin of SARS, with as high as 30% fatality. SARS has been around for some time now, but still no vaccine or computing projects either.

Re: MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) VIRUS

Hi cjslman and jr1,
My apologies for being unintelligible in my last post. Naturally WCG has to wait for scientists to propose a project but often there is a more important reason why diseases are not being investigated on computers. Molecules are all curled up so that only a surface is presented for chemicals to attack. This surface has to be mapped by X-ray diffraction analysis. There are a lot of potential problems that techniques are slowly being developed to overcome. For example, shortly after we began FAAH in 2005 (maybe in 2007?) improvements revealed an 'allosteric' site which we spent years finding several drug candidates to work against. This was more than a decade after first mapping the target molecule, so that shows how much we need to improve our technology. Before xraying a molecule, it has to be crystallized out of liquid suspension. This is a lengthy process that sometimes succeeds and sometimes fails. The HCC project we worked on was an attempt to develop a high throughput crystallization technique using computer vision.

I think that it was Target #10 for HFCC that we waited a year for before giving up. It just would not crystallize. Our computers are helpless against molecules that refuse to crystallize. Crystallizing molecules is more rule-of-thumb kitchen cooking than high-tech button pushing.

Sorry for not being clearer before,
Lawrence

Re: MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) VIRUS

Talking molecules or protein/virus/pathogen needing to be crystallized? We know the success had at hfcc in getting their previous new target prepared, and the news read a women getting 10 million doses of measles inoculant and being cured of myeloma http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now...ncer-mayo-clinic/9115363/. How they figured that out to try this is amazing. How many years of research went before to get to this idea?

Lawrence... thank you so very much for your detailed explanation. It helped a lot to understand the process.
