Re: A WCG IOU Idea

The value derived from participating in this project is entirely internal. It is voluntarily done with no expectation of any personal monetary return. Hopefully any external return benefits all mankind to help alleviate suffering and make lives better.
Cheers

Re: A WCG IOU Idea

sgt., i know it is voluntary and i know there are no expectations of monetary return. i was just trying to throw an idea out there that a "token" in ripple can be issued and distributed based on "provable work". this token has no value per se, but it could have value benefiting your cause.

anyway, i admire this community's selflessness and honesty. maybe there's another community out there who might be interested.

thanks for the feed back.

bimbim,
You might try the Boinc project DistrRTgen which seems to be the most mercenary of projects. http://boinc.freerainbowtables.com/distrrtgen/

They are cracking passwords for security companies. They give the highest points of any Boinc project so it is dominated by crunchers who are only in it for the points. They may be more accepting of your idea of crunching for reward.

edit: sorry misread your post. :)

but yeah, this would be counterintuitive. i'd rather pitch the idea to projects who does more valuable work, as these projects would be more deserving to somehow have the possibility of creating value for themselves. in turn this value would be used to expand their projects.

i believe ripple could be used to create and gain value for ourselves without government intervention. just like what this community is doing: https://xrptalk.org/topic/1865-cultivating-a-...st-for-trading-hour-ious/

it's a community project based on LETS.

the guy who started that is a prominent member of the villagers.cc community and even ryan fugger, the creator of the original ripple is in one of his trust lines.

Re: A WCG IOU Idea

No. No way. Never.

I do what I do for WCG, to benefit mankind, not to earn Ripples/Bitcoins/IOUs etc.

I don't want, nor expect any financial reward for the time & electricity used.

BTW, I was 'hacked' by some tosspot from Ripple, so they could claim credit on my behalf. In 15 years that I've been crunching various things, no one has 'hacked' me, until Ripple came along and the promise of earning money.

As soon as money is brought into something, it brings out the worst in people and attracts the wrong type of people.

What if WCG increases the points it gives out, would that bring in some more participation?

This is why I for one, am glad that the CFG-Ripple giveaway has ended.

I would much rather see additional adoption through some low cost targeted web advertising. Sites like Wired or Tom's Hardware would be ideal. The sites may even be willing to donate advertising space given the good causes, in exchange for a "current donors" link on the WCG website. IBM brings a level of reputation to this endeavor that few can match.

Re: A WCG IOU Idea

My intention is not to offend someone with my thoughts in the following lines!

To be honest: As the ripple team came up "buying" resources I was close to stop participating on WCG.
I love the spirit of volonteering. For me it's a pleasure to donate my ressources for free.
Another aspect I think about: In my opinion there is a risk that WCG might be blackmailed if a team was founded with commercial interests and a massive amount of team members.
