Project Settings vs Computer Prefs

Is WCG ever going to separate the two. Counter to standard Boinc, if I want to change my project settings (such as which apps to run) I end up also altering the global Computer Prefs file (such as processor/network/memory usage). Furthermore, this non-standard xml file that WCG uses, apparently, messes up some other projects that are expecting a standard boinc xml file.

Another related issue, my project settings that I have set for home/work/school seem to have been wiped resulting in all computers using the default setting. I originally thought it was related to the new web look, but it has happened multiple times since after I have used other sites to set the global computer prefs.

Re: Project Settings vs Computer Prefs

You have a Local Prefs File which is PC specific and overides all other settings.

Re: Project Settings vs Computer Prefs

1. Altering the projects selection at profile level does -not- change the preferences!. If the global settings were changed you'd see that printed in the agent event log.

2. You probably added a project to the agent as new member, creating an account on the fly. The stupidity is, that those projects are then unaware of home+school+work, and then boinc world assumes you deleted those somewhere and erases them everywhere else. Proper would be imnho if the new project inherits the location profiles from the first agent that gets attached to a project. Not so, but it could end this madness.

1) Scribe is correct that the there is a local override that keeps the previous local prefs intact. Basic options = project settings, advanced options = Computer prefs. If you did not set up a local override, if you changed the projects settings, WCG default advanced options will be used for the computer prefs. And yes I have seen WCG trying to set the computer prefs in the event log file. Please remember that Boinc tries to replicate the most recent altered computer prefs to all computers.

from boinc web site:
On the web: You can edit preferences on the web site of any project in which you participate. If you do this, then:

The changes will take effect on ALL the computers attached to that account; this is handy if you have a lot of computers.
The changes will take effect on a given computer the next time that computer contacts the project's server. This typically happens automatically every day or so. You can do it manually by selecting the project in the BOINC Manager (Advanced View) and clicking Update.

This is not handy if you want to set some computers differently.

2) Um, no. Only the WCG profiles disappeared and none from other projects.

What I do is use the default profile for all non-WCG projects and use home, school and work only for WCG. This works because I only crunch non-WCG projects with my GPUs and generally only one project at a time. This way I don't let the non-WCG crunching requirements interfere with WCG.

Good you know more than you let on in first post wink

Effective global profile settings [advanced if you will] for a device is timestamp based and proliferates from latest amended to all associated hosts, yes. Don't know if profiles are then updated, pushed up from the client again to WCG in an server project A > agent > server project B. Guess not, so can see some being driven nuts if on next update at project B with different settings agents gets them downloaded again.

Profiles being deleted at WCG and not elsewhere is either WCG being wrong in inserting the client_request info or everywhere else is wrong by not importing the client_request info which sends the info the project being attached to. It's dubious that when adding a project, the new project assumes a host will use default, when in fact elsewhere it could be associated to a different location designator. Summary: My thinking is everywhere else is acting incorrect by not importing the global_prefs on first contact.

Re: Project Settings vs Computer Prefs

Actually, long as a profile is having NO 'custom' section changes on the website, then yes default is used. If you select the 'custom' radio button and modify the settings "beyond" the fields that comprise the performance presets, then you'll find the wcg settings will stick as well and on next visit the locations will show the 'custom' selection rather than the preset [default] for most who never meddled with the deeper settings, to include the local computer settings interface.

Insert 'NO' in first line.
