Hi all,
----------------------------------------I am a little bit frustrated that whenever I would want to run a boinc project along side with WCG for some reason that project does not really share processing resources with WCG. For example, I recently decided to donate to SIMAP project, and it worked okay at first. Most of WUs are only half an hour so I expected BOINC to run a WU from WCG after the SIMAP WU was finished. Problem is that now it is running only SIMAP WUs even though I put the resrouces share to be 80% WCG and only 20% for SIMAP. Has anyone expereinced this before and found a solution? Or am I being too impatient and should let SIMAP run for a while and then BOINC will eventually run more WCG WU? I have only been contibuting since yesterday. I have kept everything pretty much at default, contributing 100% cpu, and have kept switch between application setting at 60 minutes. Thank you for your input. ![]() |

The easiest and best solution is.......................delete Simap

As I recall, SIMAP doesn't have work available all of the time. They have a sizable batch of work to be done each month and when it's gone, it's gone. I can't see how that would affect resource share though. I have crunched other projects along with WCG, just not recently. I dealt with which project I got work from by simply setting "No new work" for all but the ones I wanted wotk from. I need to go look at what BOINC has to say about resource share again. |

Thanks keithhenry, I was assuming that too for SIMAP. I guess I will see if their workunits will eventually end. The funny thing is that it started out with one or two, then after you update and they see that you actually are doing the work it sends you 50 of them.
----------------------------------------Also I have two other laptops that are doing crunching and it seems like they are doing half WCG and half SIMAP. I checked all the settings and they are exactly the same. ![]() |

Working from memory, I want to say that SIMAP usually runs out of work for the month after about seven or so days. If you look at the doc on the BOINC site, it doesn't really say much at all about how it works. From googling BOINC resource share, I've found a bit more. Basically, it appears that, if it works correctly, it is not the way folks normally expect it to work. It does not crunch for 80 percent of the time and then switch to the 20 percent. Resouce share has nothing to do with what WUs BOINC crunches when. What it is supposed to affect is which project it goes to to get new work when that is needed. In other words, it affects what gets downloaded, not crunched. It seems that the average work done numbers a the main factor in deciding which project to get work from. If you've been running WCG for a while and just started Simap, AWD for SIMAP is probably quite low compared to WCG and thus why you see it getting so much SIMAP work. You can google BOINC resource share and browse the results to see more details.

One day really is too short to be able to tell. Trying to figure out how Boinc micro-manages things will drive you crazy.
----------------------------------------Now, if you let it run unhindered for a couple weeks and compare the results you will find that it stays pretty close to whatever ratio you set - in the long run. Short term can be all over the map. ![]() Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 |

Apparently so far only units for SIMAP have been running, but the WCG units that are close to their due date are then run with high priority so at least they won't be lost and incomplete.
----------------------------------------I guess then I just have to wait for it to average out and it will run normal like I intended. BOINC should really put a feature or a control that lets you decide how many work units should come from which project that starts as soon as you add in a new projects instead of waiting for the new one to average out. Thanks for the info everyone. Appreciate all the support from this forum. ![]() |

It's all about the <rec> value. You'll find that in the client_state.xml file in the BOINC Data directory.
----------------------------------------The project with the lowest <rec> will be crunched first/asked work for first. When a project is running the <rec> will increase and when it's not running the <rec> will slowly decrease. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Crystal Pellet at Apr 14, 2014 3:46:45 PM] |

Ok so here is the way I and many others do it...
In the "boinc-client/project/project-name" folder add a notepad file and save it as "app_config.xml" (no quotes of course)! For the simap project, add the following to the file and save:
The max_concurrent... line defines how many workunits to run at a time for that project. For WCG create another app_config.xml file in the WCG folder add
