Assuming you're using the standard windows shell, you can probably use some 3rd party tool to selectively hide the icon for this or any other program from your system tray without actually disturbing the process.

http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en...+icons%22&btnG=Search

From these results, Windows XP seems to inherently support this functionality of selectively hiding tray icons, while the two 3rd party candidates from this search that jump out are Tray Saver (freeware?) and Tray Pilot (commercial).

what version of windows are you running?

on my XP box, if I right click on the Start button and select Properties, then select the Taskbar tab, then select the Customize button, it displays a list of the various system tray icons and the default behavior. If I select World Community Grid Agent, it gives me an option to always hide the icon.

Would that work in your classroom?

Check this thread:
Run while not logged on

Scheduling UD.EXE to run at startup (Scheduled Tasks), will not show the icon. OTOH, you can't see the progress that easily (starting screensaver is a way).
Remember to run the schedule as the user which created the Grid account.
