"For istance, a review of completed project on IBM's World Community Grid for biomedical research uncovers a lacklustre output (see go.nature.com/fkheej). Four out of 16 of these projects have yet to produce any pubblications, even though the earliest project was completed more than 5 years ago. Others have generate only non-peer-review output, such as book chapters or conference proceedings. Of the peer-reviewed output, several focused solely on the technical aspect of distributed computing, with no analysis of the computed results". "Researchers should be reminded that public support and confidence are gained through professional and timely communication of results". |

So why do you title it as a criticism of WCG, you should vent your anger at the researchers, not WCG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's one person's opinion expressed in a letter responding to an article in Nature which explores a loss of momentum in distributed computing.
----------------------------------------The letter makes the point: To maintain the viability of volunteer computing projects, researchers should be reminded that public support and confidence are gained through professional and timely communication of results. We know this. WCG knows this. It is a point that continually needs hammering home to Project Scientists generally. The fact that the author of the letter - Herman Tse University of Hong Kong - uses WCG to demonstrate his point is not a criticism of WCG per se. It's only because WCG handily makes available links to projects and their publcations that he is able to reference GO Fight Against Malaria. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Mar 31, 2014 10:30:05 AM] |

So why do you title it as a criticism of WCG, you should vent your anger at the researchers, not WCG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The article is not mine, so i have no anger. WCG is primary its researchers. I think it's a "stimulus" for projects this article.... |

Gently.
----------------------------------------The article referenced does not say anything about the databases created by our computers. I once read a review about literary criticism using its method of deconstruction to review research in nuclear particle physics. An article that does not even mention the word database seems almost equally strange to me. Or is the author making an indirect criticism of the journals for not publishing gigabytes and terabytes of results? Either way, my approach is to adopt a puzzled look and await additional information. Lawrence Added: jhindo made a post today ( https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ad,36355_offset,40#453190 ) which seems to be a combined answer to two different criticisms - this one and a different critical post by Saul Luizaga at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ad,36355_offset,20#449763 ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 31, 2014 8:32:52 PM] |

Thanks everyone, you'll be pleased to hear we've submitted an official response to that letter which we've been told will be published in the next issue.

PS. Here's the link to our response to Herman Tse's letter to Nature: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v508/n7494/full/508044d.html , although you'll need a subscription to view the entire response.

The readcube preview option allowed me to read the entire response without a subscription, but I still agree that it would be great to have the response here on the WCG Forum.
