RIP AW-1

Well, it's official. My first WCG machine has finally gone beyond the ability to repair. Sure it took 17 years to die and it looked quite a bit like Frankenstein's monster by the time it finished, but what a workhorse. Double city-wide power outages last night finished it off.

This was an Alienware that I purchased somewhere in the mid to late '90s. It was unable to do most projects due to invalids and no homogeneous pool so it was consigned to CEP cranking out 1-3 work units per day.

First computer ever that I've simply tossed without salvaging anything off of it (well, I did save the power cord). There just wasn't anything there that would ever be used again. Really, who uses IDE any longer?

You will be missed. Thanks for all the years of solid crunching.

Re: RIP AW-1

No picture.

Case was some used thing I found (original had long ago been re-purposed because it looks so cool).

No sides for cooling. Couple open holes where optical drives were removed.

Power supply sitting loose on top of the case with wires running to the MB. PS cooling fan had given up for the third? time long ago so sitting out there kept it from overheating as well as I couldn't find one to fit properly.

Since WCG doesn't allow merging of machines I have no idea of total points. This incarnation had 2.6 million or so. It would be interesting to add them all up and check.

I kept a keyboard attached to it so I could push enter when it re-booted due to power outages. Something with the bios, don't remember really as there was no monitor.

Finally, I think it was still running XP although that would have been an upgrade at some point.
