Re: Blind user

Hi geopsychic,

Is you friend using a NUC like the ones advertised in Newegg? They show that they are installed in a 4.6" X 4.4" X 1.4" case with little or no active cooling (fans running). If so, it probably will get very warm when running BOINC tasks at a steady pace.

When BOINC first starts, the client software runs CPU benchmarks which means that it runs all CPU cores at full throttle so the client software can see what kind of performance to expect. That may be what caused his NUC to get so warm so quickly after he started up the client but before he was able to attach to WCG.

If he wants to try to attach to WCG using the boinccmd I have some experience using the command line interface. Is he using Windows? If so, it requires that he log on to the web site, go to "my profile" and get his weak account key. Then he needs to open a command line window and key (or copy in) some commands. If he wants to try that, let me know and I will supply all of the commands. Before I do, I want to try all of them on a spare Windows instance so I can make sure they work as expected. All of my experience previously was in Ubuntu and it is a bit different.

Hope that helps,
captainjack

On my computers the benchmark runs on 1 thread such as can be seen in task manager performance tab under w7 8 core. The benchmark runs at the same nicest priority as the single thread sciences to best emulate the true and comparable computing performance while crunching.

boinccmd under all platforms works same, except under Linux you might need sudo to get the commands to execute. Under windows you may need to open a cmd window as admin, depending if installed as user or service.

Re: Blind user

Here are some instructions on using boinccmd to attach to WCG.

Locate the folder where the BOINC application is installed. On my W7 64-bit box, it is installed in c:\Program Files\BOINC. BOINC is installed as a user (not as a service). If BOINC is installed in a different location on your machine, substitute that location in the command below.

Attaching to WCG from the command prompt requires that you know your account key. There are two options for finding your account key. Option 1 is from the web site, Option 2 is from the command prompt.

Option 1 for finding your account key is this: From your favorite browser, access the WCG homepage (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org)

Click on "Settings", then click on "My Profile"

It will ask you to login again

Enter your member name and password and click "Enter"

Locate your Account Key; the account key is a long character string of 32 mixed numbers and lower case alphabetic characters

Substitute that in the command below where it says AccountKey

Open up a Command Prompt window. You can do that by clicking on the Windows orb in the bottom left corner of the screen, then click on "All Programs", then click on "Accessories", then click on "Command Prompt".

Normal operation mode for the Command Prompt window is to key in all commands. If you want to paste in commands, the normal hot key for paste (ctrl v) does not work. To set up the command prompt window for paste operations, right click on the bar at the top of the window where it says "Command Prompt", a drop down will open where you can select "Properties", on the right side of the "Command Prompt Properties" window is a small section with a header of "Edit Options", in that section is a check box that is labeled "Quick Edit Mode", Click that check box then select "OK" at the bottom of the window. Now you can move your mouse into the Command Prompt window and do a right mouse click to perform the paste operation.

Option 2 for finding your account key is to issue a boinccmd from the command prompt. The command is the second in the list below. Note that the standard boinccmd on the BOINC web site says to use email address and password. That works on most BOINC research projects but WCG is set up differently. All logons are based on username. When you issue the command, it will return the 32 character account key. If you already know your account key, you can skip that command in the sequence below.

In the Command Prompt window, enter or paste in the following commands:

cd c:\Program Files\BOINC
boinccmd --lookup_account http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org username password
boinccmd --project_attach http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org AccountKey

The BOINC client should now be attached to WCG.

Here are some other useful boinccmd commands:

boinccmd --project http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org nomorework (tells the BOINC client to allow no more work to be downloaded)

boinccmd --project http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org

allowmorework (tells the BOINC client to allow more work to be downloaded)

boinccmd --get_messages (shows the message log)

boinccmd --get_tasks (shows about 20 lines of information about each task in the queue including percent complete, estimated time remaining, task name, and if it is ready to report)

boinccmd --get_host_info (shows information about the host system configuration)

boinccmd --version (shows the version of BOINC that is running)

Hope that helps.

If you find anything that needs to be updated, let me know and I will update this post.

Re: Blind user

I got this in a reply on the BOINC wiki:

------------------------------------------------------------------
All right, according to the developers there's been code in place since 2009 that adds read-support for JAWS to BOINC Manager. They haven't heard of any of this in a long time.

Now, what the user can try to do, is to install BOINC 7.2.42, as this version doesn't use bitmaps for the buttons in Simple View, something that 6.10.58 does still do. Although your blind user is talking about tabs, so we can deduce he managed to get to Advanced View. But even here adjustments have been made, to allow for using keyboard only, and no mouse. It may be that it's a problem with 6.10.58, so it is best to try with an up-to-date version first.

In case he wants to use a WCG version only, there's a beta one available:

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/wcg_boinc_7.2.7_windows_intelx86.exe

Mind, do warn, if the user wants to try to use BOINC 7.2.42, that he should download the plain version, without Virtual Box, and that they should check that they get the correct version --32 bit or 64 bit.
