Best I can tell this issue started for my systems around Feb 28, 2014. Multiple machines running both windows XP and Ubuntu 12.04 on different LANs are reporting "Downloading Work" but the download never completes. Have started and stopped BOINC Manager as well as rebooted the systems - the event log reports:
Fri 14 Mar 2014 10:35:37 AM CDT | World Community Grid | Backing off 11 min 8 sec on download of mcm1_image01_7.28.tga Fri 14 Mar 2014 10:36:06 AM CDT | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site Fri 14 Mar 2014 10:36:08 AM CDT | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down. Have other systems that are running side-by-side with the systems unable to retreive work units. I'm scratching my head - anybody got any ideas?" |

I think that the tga image files are only downloaded if they are not already present on the machine, and are science-application and version dependent. The 7.28 in the filename implies that the machine has been assigned an MCM version 7.28 task, so I deduce that no other MCM 7.28 task was present on that machine at that time. This could occur if the machine had previously completed all 7.28 tasks and the cache contained only 7.29 tasks, but then received a 7.28 repair job.
----------------------------------------You could check whether the other machines that are not seeing this problem have tasks that do not fit this situation and so have no need to download the image files. If this does accurately describe your situation, then it looks as though the process or server(s) that host the image files are having a bad time at the moment, but that task files can still download (same or different servers, I don't know). The change from MCM 7.28 to 7.29 occurred yesterday 13 March. [Edit] I can't explain the 28 Feb start that you report. Clutching at another straw, do you have a manual firewall configuration that doesn't like the new content delivery system? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 14, 2014 4:35:09 PM] |

problem appears to be the new content delivery system - for some reason yet to be determined (firewall or router configurations) we're not receiving back a valid DNS address for BDD7.https.cdn.softlayer.net.
Haven't completed the diagnosis yet - thanks for the hint that pointed me in the right direction - was thinking that myself, but hadn't had time to follow up yet. I'll update you when I have better isolated (and resolved) the issue. Thanks!! |

Found the issue - we have a content filter appliance (ironport) that was blocking the new content management system's IP address.
Thanks Tony for the suggestion, and a Happy St. Patricks Day too yee! |
