Multiprocessor but one project

Hi all,

I've set up an 8-core CPU dedicated to WCG project work. This server is cloud-based and I am paying a subscription to run the server. However rather than running several projects simultaneously I would like to dedicate one project, just done x8 faster by splitting the workload across the cores.

Can this be done? Can I get one 8 hr project completed in one hour? Can I therefore not waste processing time if my subscription at the end of the month runs out of credit and the server closes?

Please let me know if this is possible, if so how to set this up.

Best regards,

Matthew Bennett

Re: Multiprocessor but one project

"Project" refers to an entire project like FAAH or MCM.

Work unit refers to a single chunk of work.

You can set the CPU to run just one project but you can't have a multi-core cpu split a work unit unfortunately.

Sorry, but at the moment, WCG has no multithreaded applications.

But you can run 8 tasks on an 8 core machine, all at the same time!

Boinc will run on all available cores unless you have restricted it. Check your settings and post some detail if it doesn't run 8 tasks/work units at a time

That is not his problem. He wants to split one WU over the 8 cores so that it completes in one eighth of the time.....and he has been told he cannot do that wink

Yep, but running 1 wu on 8 cores = 1/8th time, running 1 x 8 = the same result...

1 wu = 8 hours on 1 core or 1 hour on 8 cores, running for 8 hours would complete 8 wu's

8 wu's on 8 cores = 8 hours to complete 8 wu's

End result the same.

Not exactly, what if you have only 7 hours of CPU time to work with? That leaves 8 workunits 90% finished (theoretically), which will be a total loss of a rented machine for that time period.

He was attempting to minimize the "lost" compute time.
