separate BOINC setting for idle & in use

Hi all,

I have had my PC set up for the last few years such that WCG only runs as a screenscraver and also is limited to 95% of the CPU time. Now I'd like to set it up such that the BOINC client runs with a 95% CPU limit when running as a screenscraver, but then also is allowed to run while the computer is in use but at a different limit, maybe 20% or 10% of CPU time. That could drastically increase my contribution, but alas seems infeasible with the way the BOINC settings are now. So this is two questions: (a) is there actually a way to configure this that I haven't thought of, & (b) if not, what's a reasonable first step I could take toward getting this feature implemented in the BOINC client?

Thanks!

Hi, not sure, but youy could try setting your profile to use all cores - minus one all the time and see if it works okay for you. the BOINC works is, it uses all available CPU time (settings permiting) and when another application needs the CPU, BOINC releases it till that other app is "satisfied". Also, you can disable the screensaver since it is pretty much useless and uses valuable CPU time.

'blank' is a great screensaver that does not bother anything.

Thanks for the screensaver pointer y'all, but I couldn't find that setting ANYWHERE. I checked the WCG site & the BOINC manager... where am I not looking, please?
Thanks! Jeff

Oh duh, thanks! But I've got a list of choices, and it comes down to blank OR World Community Grid, so I'm afraid selecting blank means WCG will never get kicked off...

Choose blank or none. BOINC will run as your settings allow, regardless of the screensaver which is merely cosmetic. You can set BOINC to run while you use the computer or just when idle.
