Hey all, I've currently got my 2 laptops set to connect to the network only between 3a and 5a, but they pretty much always wait until 4:30a to request work for the whole day, which for them takes longer than 30 minutes to download.
----------------------------------------Is there any way I can tell them to request work earlier in the specified network window so they don't run out of network time? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Mgruben at Feb 16, 2014 6:22:15 PM] |

I don't understand why it takes you so long. My computer which is old can download a day's worth of work in a matter of seconds. Are you using a dial-up old fashioned modem?

mgruben, post the buffer settings, the minimum and the additional and client version. Someone here might tell you why this happens to you. Consider BOINC like your homebank on which you've set automatic payment withdrawals, then ask yourself when you need to top up the balance

Initially,
----------------------------------------Connect to network about every … days was set to 1 and Cache … extra days of work was set to 2;then I set Connect to network about every … days to 0 and kept Cache … extra days of work at 2.In both scenarios, BOINC waited until 4:30a to send a scheduler update request. Edit: boinc --version reports "7.2.39 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Mgruben at Feb 21, 2014 11:27:11 PM] |

Since you are using version 7.2.xx, the settings on the WCG site match up like this:
Connect to network about every ... days = Minimum work buffer Cache ... extra days of work = Additional work buffer Version 7.2.xx will fetch work whenever the amount of work on your system drops below the Minimum work buffer setting. The best way to make it fetch work earlier in your network availability window is to set them like the following: Connect to network about every ... days/Minimum work buffer to 2.5 Cache ... extra days of work/Additional work buffer to 0.0 Setting Minimum to 2.5 should provide enough work to last for the 22 hours without network access and when the network is available it will start uploads, then request more work as soon as the number of uploads is less than ncpus*2. The most important part is to set the Cache extra/Additional work to 0. |

Wouldn't you know, the obverse was just what I was looking for.
----------------------------------------That is, setting: Connect to network about every [2.0] days Sends scheduler requests at (well, really near) the beginning of the network availability window.Cache [0] extra days of work It's exactly the setup I was looking for, and was the one I hadn't yet tried. Thanks for the suggestion Bobcat ![]() ![]() |
