BOINC fails to connect to localhost

WCG 6.10.58 on Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Core i7 3770K, 16GB ram, no antivirus says "connecting to localhost" and just sits there. BOINC is and was installed as a service. CPU usage is 1%. Everything was working fine afaik until the patch Tuesday updates today. I have uninstalled BOINC, restarted, reinstalled, restarted, and still the same message "Connecting to localhost.

EDIT: Just did the same updates on my other machine also Windows 7 x64. and everything is fine. The only difference is on the machine I'm having trouble with I also installed Bing Desktop with Windows Update.

This is annoying me as I just purchased a second computer to remain in the top 5000.

Hello Aslan7,
Searching for connecting AND localhost, is this recent thread helpful?

Re: BOINC fails to connect to localhost I am annoyed

I've looked through that thread previously and tried some things. I've gone back and tried them again now and here are the results.

Boinc.exe is running. The messages tab in Boinc manager is empty. I am running Boinc from the same account I installed and I also selected "allow all users" during install. Tools> "attach to project or account manager" does nothing, no windows or dialog boxes open.

This account has UAC enabled, but doesn't require a password.

So, no results, I'm in the same position as before.

Re: BOINC fails to connect to localhost I am annoyed

Well, Falconet, your suggestion of switching to 7.0.64 works. I installed it in user mode as it doesn't have support for GPU's in service mode, then found out BOINC doesn't like my Radeon 5750. Frusterating to leave performance on the table like that. Is it possible for WCG to use the Intel i4000 GPU integrated with my processor? It bothers me that the official WCG client doesn't work properly, this Windows install is about 3 weeks old, and shouldn't be experiencing any flakiness. BTW I did run an AV scan and that turned up nothing. 7.0.64 is working well. The notices tab is nice, but the messages tab is missing. Oftentimes I left the messages tab open to see if anything was currently an issue. I realize I can see the messages in the Event log, or CTRL + SHIFT + E, but there's still no find or goto red message.

Anyway, thanks Falconet, and Lawerencehardin.

Re: BOINC fails to connect to localhost I am annoyed

6.10.58, the WCG "approved" version, has been around for a very long time. It is rumoured that a new "approved" version 7.x.xx will be available sometime this year.

Asian7, There are currently no WCG projects that utilize our GPUs. This is not a flaw in WCG or Boinc. I too have a 5750 which I use for other Boinc projects.

Re: BOINC fails to connect to localhost I am annoyed

Glad it worked.

The messages tab can be accessed by going to "Advanced" and "Event Log". Install the latest AMD Drivers for your graphics card if BOINC isn't detecting your GPU. As deltavee said, WCG currently has no GPU projects so you can try using your GPU at other BOINC projects like Einstein@home, which, if I recall correctly, has an OpenCL application for not only you AMD card but also for your Intel GPU.
