I have someone from my family that has a laptop with a core i5 3427U processor (2 cores, 4 threads). If the laptop was mine, I would probably put the 4 threads to use at 100% CPU usage. The problem is that the laptop makes more noise (from the fan, I presume) with such a preference setting and this person gets annoyed from such noise. Currently, using 50% of the threads at 80% cpu usage it seems the noise is not a problem. But maybe the laptop could give more...
1. What configuration for BOINC would you suggest for this laptop CPU-wise? I know I could tinker with the settings to get my own answer, but maybe with your experience you could help me understand this problem better. 2. Just to understand a little bit about using multiple threads on BOINC, what would be best for the health of the CPU, results and noise-wise: to use 4 threads at 50% CPU usage or 2 threads at 100% usage? |

Hello,
I used 100% of CPU cores and 70% of CPU time on my former laptop. But it really depends on it's cooling and even more on temperature in the room, when the laptop operates. So try to play a little with the settings and when you find the optimal value, just reduce the performance by 10% in order to create safety pillow so it won't bother the laptop user. |

Hello:
I have two laptops with i7 (4 cores and 8 threads) and I run the processors at 100%. To keep the heat under control, I use a laptop cooler on both laptops. I have the room set at 15 degrees C. And I also vacuum the laptop fan vents to prevent the build up of dust. Hope this helps. Clive |

First, thank you for your input. @Cruncher Doesn't that full throttle strategy make a lot of unpleasant noise?

Another trick you can try is limiting the amount of memory BOINC can use when the computer is in use. Go to tools then comp preferences and then disk and memory tab. Set the amount of memory when in use to something very low like 1-5%.
----------------------------------------I have to do this on the rig I'm using now which is a 2600k. I've tried using process lasso to set the IO, memory and disk priorities for BOINC tasks but even that doesn't keep the system from slowing down or freezing. Currently I'm running only FAHV and MCM1 and have memory set to 1.3% and all 8 threads are running but I have no slow down. When even that doesn't help, I set it to .5% and I will generally get 3 or 4 tasks waiting to run. I have memory set to 10% when the computer is idle though. I have 16GB of RAM though, so adjust to your sys config. ![]() ![]() |

Thank you all for your input. I'm being able to keep 4 threads @ 100% (full throttle) for now as this person is not finding the noise too annoying. I'll lower as necessary for reducing the noise.
