Inspired by NAP's movie thread, I thought I would start one on great television programs.
----------------------------------------I've been watching a lot more television lately than I really should and want to share some of the better programs I've seen lately. I hope others will also contribute as I'm always on the lookout for a new series to binge on. One I found just recently from ITV is The Bletchely Circle . It's about a group of women who worked at Bletchely Park during WWII and what they did with their talents after the war was over. As you may know, Bletchely is the famous code breaking center in England that was responsible for decrypting Nazi messages sent with the help of the Enigma machine. You might be inclined to criticize the show for being just another in the "empowerment" genre but I think it's quite good for a period piece and will probably appeal to anyone who is old enough to remember the 50's or has any interest in that period in the UK. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Feb 4, 2014 3:20:05 AM] |

Over the past many, many years, I have worked with several crews of various trades, but I have yet to see a bunch that didn't speak of PBS and BBC. Quite a long while ago, one crew would talk of Cold Comfort Farm and I Saw Something Nasty ln The Wood Shed. Every Monday morning, some one would rehash the Sunday Night episode. The movie version was under rated and under appreciated.

Orphan Black is an amazingly good show yoro - very good call. It's one of the few I have Google Calendar alerts set for. I'd like to set up a discussion thread for it when it starts but the one other I tried to create for True Blood went over like a lead balloon. I'm happy to do it though if there's some interest. I'd love to discuss the plot developments and speculate. There would have to be spoilers though.
----------------------------------------Another current show on BBC tv is The Three Musketeers. I've only seen the first episode but it looks really good if you're into old fashioned, Errol Flynn type swashbuckling. (First person to ask who that is gets an old fart tongue lashing). You should be able to catch up on the first 3 episodes on the BBC website - assuming that you're in the UK. Fourth episode airs Feb 9th. ![]() ![]() |

twilyth, Yea, start the Orphan Black tread. Though I tend to be a post episode contributor instead of a spoiler. But, One never knows...

Yoro: Will do - April 19th is the season premier. But I too tend to catch things after they air so please remind me if I don't notice the calendar alert in time.
----------------------------------------Bev: I didn't think I would like Downton but OMG is it addicting. I think I watched the first 3 or 4 seasons straight through. I felt the same way about Madmen which I also got hopelessly hooked on. I do tend to get more emotionally involved with Madmen though - not sure why. ![]() ![]() |

Mad Men & Downton Abbey are also two of favorites of mine. Been watching both since there 1st shows. Of the two I'd vote for Mad Men but I'll keep watching Downton.

Has anyone seen Mr. Selfridge? It's an ITV/PBS collaboration now in its second season.
----------------------------------------It reminds a lot of Downton Abbey but if Downton were a department store in roughly the same time period. Okay, that's probably a rotten analogy. I'm probably just being influenced by the fact that it has a lot of similar visual elements. I'm only one full episode into it so I can't tell if I'm going to like it but it's looking that way. ![]() ![]() |

I had watched several episodes of Mr. Selfridge and think it should be
----------------------------------------judged on its own merits. A period drama about the American founder of London's department store. I must admit that I wasn't aware a new series had started again. Also might add, having purchased a leather coat there some years back, that Selfridge's leaves no trace of scenes from the past. Going back in time and seeing the beginning of the modern department store with it's mixture of characters makes for an interesting storyline. |
