Hello Team,
do we have some relevant data how is MCM performing in various environments? I would be interested in comparison between OS types i.e Windows Vs Linux and also if there is a difference in 32bit Vs 64 bit architecture used. So the question is what is worth installing (and maintaining) in case the MCM project will be main focus of the machine. Thank you in advance. |

Hello Sgt.Joe,
it helps a bit, but not too much. It seems, that there is not a significant difference between 32bit and 64bit Linuxes, but there are not any other conclusion, but you have pretty impressive arsenal :-) It would be really interesting to have it from statistically significant amount of systems. The best would be to have average points per hour (MCM project only) for: 1. 32 bit Windows 2. 32 bit Linux 3. 64 bit Windows 4. 64 bit Linux from systems with the same (most common CPU at WCG hosts). But without techs we won't be able to get the data, but thank you anyway. |

Well, at least you can tell there is virtually no difference between 32bit and 64 bit Linux. From my experience with the the two machines running the different versions of Windows, the two systems behave about as expected, the q6600 is faster than the AMD Phenom. The point, I believe, is the project is much more dependent on the processor speed than the OS. Perhaps someone else will be able to do a more apples to apples comparison for Windows.

Just to complicate things, has anyone tested/confirmed if there is any real advantage to running this in a RAMdrive such as that with CEP2?

Just to complicate things, has anyone tested/confirmed if there is any real advantage to running this in a RAMdrive such as that with CEP2? I run RAMdisks on three of my PCs running CEP2, but when I checked MCM running on four Haswell cores, they produced even fewer writes than the log files. I did not investigate it over a lengthy period of time, but if they are of that order, there is nothing to be gained. |

In my opinion RAM disk is worth for I/O heavy tasks like CEP2.
You can check via task manager I/O per hour for CEP2 and MCM and consider. Even better is to have the computation in separate VM so you can check overall VM I/O and divide it by total CPU consumption in order to get I/O per hour and compare. |

Have you looked at WUProp for comparisons. That is kind of what they do...

Make sure to add that project to your BOINC client too. It is non-CPU intensive and will run alongside your other work units.
