Suspending upload process

I'm pretty sure that the answer to this is going to be "no", but I'll ask anyway.

I have a pretty fast system (I'm usually faster than my wingmen) so I have no problems running CEP on all four cores of my system at a time. However, my computer is also my general purpose computer and doubles as a television. When the CEP files upload, that process seems to take over the computer. If I am playing a video, the video keeps stopping.

This would not be an issue if the upload process only took a few minutes, but now that it's back to long jobs, the upload process takes half an hour and often I get another job as it is finishing (I'm unlucky in my timing). As I type this I have been waiting for an hour for CEP to give me my computer back.

If, for some reason, I want the WCG jobs to pause while I'm doing something intensive, I can suspect the program. That doesn't stop the uploads.

So is there anyway I can pause the uploads (with or without pausing WCG) during those times I want to watch videos?

Eve

You appear to have 2 choices, in Device manager you can set the periods when you allow a network connection, set it to only connect at night. Or, on your activity in Boinc Manager set not to use network when active.........

You could also 'suspend network activity' on a temp basis under 'activity' in Boinc manager. The re-enable it when the film or other non-Boinc activity is over

Are streaming the video? If it's on your hard drive, file uploading shouldn't stop you from watching the video.

Re: Suspending upload process

What speed is your web connection and what kind of router are you using? I get this behavior with a Linksys WRT54G router. I get stutturing (Netflx, YouTube) and hangs halfway through the uploads. They typically stop after the uploads are complete. The uploads take 2-3 minutes on a 25/5 connection. I was going to upgrade the router but decided to focus on the new Cancer project instead. The WRT54G has been functioning flawlessly since turning off CEP2 work.

Re: Suspending upload process

In BOINC Manager, on the Network tab, try setting the Maximum upload rate to a low number, i.e. 10.0 KBs/sec, to see if that helps. If it helps, you can try increasing that number until you reach the point where the uploads interfere and set it a little lower.

Re: Suspending upload process

Thanks, BobCat, I did that. There's no way of knowing how well it works until the next time I am comfortably absorbed in a tv program only to see it stall and know that CEP is doing its "Mommy, see what good work I'm doing!" demo.

The first few times this happened I was venting my spleen against the TV stations until it occurred to me to check BOINC. And Murphy's Law being what it is, this tends to happen when I've had a rough day at work and just want to veg out on mind candy.

I only have about 20 days until my final badge in this project and then will make the decision whether to carry on with it until the cleanup (in 135 days according to Sekerob's graph).

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Eve

Re: Suspending upload process

Hi EveB,
yes, you can just manually suspend CEP (and all of WCG for that matter) with the Device Manager if you need the full power of your computer and I believe that should also interrupt uploads.
Best wishes,
Your CEP team
