Windows 9
----------------------------------------http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/924540...move_to_Windows_9_in_2015 Has to get back to being better than 7 but with all that Windows familiarity we have invested years into. Otherwise Google's ecosystem will win out. 18 more months of Google progress - I wonder what that will look like? Your thoughts please Dave ![]() |

I would say to Microsoft, don't over think it.
----------------------------------------Make it like Windows XP in responsiveness and ease of use, but with bulletproof security, excellent compatibility and lightweight resource use. And include a large package of user-friendly but powerful software for word processing, video/photo editing etc. The PC platform is not dead and never will be like they have made it out to be. That being said Windows 9 has to also cater to all the other devices. ![]() |

Maybe they just need to tack a fancy front end on Linux.

I hope Microsoft ditches the tiles configuration of W8. Most people don't like the tiles and how they look, and most of them are unnecessary/rarely used.
It probably seemed like a good idea to have everything people would want to use out front on the tiles, but that is just not how people are used to using computers. If I want to see whats going on in facebook, I'll go to facebook. If I want to check the weather, I can go to one of several websites. Plus about half of the tiles are for Microsoft specific things (Microsoft Store, Xbox, SkyDrive, Internet Explorer) things which most people would rarely use unless one is a very Microsoft centric user. The start button is nice so you can actually find things on your computer, uninstall programs, etc. I also think they should include Office Starter with W9, I thought it was crap that they didn't include a basic Office version in W8. There is no way I'm paying for Office software if I don't need the advanced functionality. People might as well just download Ubuntu for free which comes with LibreOffice, rather than pay for a Microsoft O/S with no office program. |

My wife bought a windows 8 laptop and has hated it every since. It seems like they tried to do too many things without thinking of the core consumers (ie people who still like the start button!!!). Just the whole blow up about the start button seemed like a parody where they added one, but it takes you to the same damn tiles that people did not want in the first place. The tiles might be a good idea if I have a touch screen laptop, but since I don't all it does is just become an annoyance. I really hope that 9 goes back a couple of steps and either makes it like 7 or at the very least like XP. |

But I also don't have a touchscreen. Maybe MS would have been better off, if Win8 had defaulted to the desktop for non-touchscreen PCs. But in 2015 a lot more laptops will have touchscreens. |

I've managed and used various computers and operating systems in the last 40 years. People will be interacting with their logic devices very differently in the future than what they are currently use to. ![]() |

Instead of quoting everyone who replied to my post, let me just say....
Touchscreen tablets have been in use with businesses for a longer time than the consumer tablet market. The way they usually work is having your basic Windows setup (like XP or W7) and the icons are "clickable" with your finger. That is basically the way all tablets work today also, whether its an Android or Apple iPad (neither of which are Windows products, and the icons are called "apps"). Microsoft was trying something different with the tiles, but I think its safe to say the majority does not prefer tiles over icons or apps. I don't see why Microsoft couldn't just make a Windows operating system that is more like classic Windows with clickable icons, so that it can be used with either desktops, touchscreen laptops, and a more basic version for tablets. |
