4: Just a note for those wishing to max out........for getting maximum points allocation for ram takes 1.25 gb......that will give you the 300 point limit. One of the issues with using VMWare on a dualie is it restricts the amout of memory you can assign to a virtual machine. I found that by installing 1.5g of memory on the host, I could then assign up to 1.25g to the VM. The UD agent recognizes 1.25g on the VM as well as the 1.5g on the host. This is one benefit of crunching on a dualie with VMWare. You can get points for 2.5g of memory with only 1.5g installed! Lots of good comments already about points but I'm going to pile on anyway. Clearly I enjoy playing the points game. Why else spend money on memory that won't increase results? But once I crossed over the line and built rigs for the sole purpose of processing WU's, buying the extra memory wasn't that big a stretch. Someone else might be willing to spend more than I am. And on and on. There's no accounting for how people spend their entertainment money. So the points game will always be a little "unfair". The way the agent assigns points doesn't always seem to make sense. Does a 2.4g AMD really deserve a 239 rating when an Intel 3.0g gets ~175? In my experience, they both produce about the same number of results. People have access to different numbers of cumputers at work. Most people have one. I have two. Some have a lot more. Points is a game that shouldn't be taken too seriously. We're all winners just by being here. So let's go out and get more points than the other teams! My hat's off to everyone for participating and JTS2 is a great team! ![]() |

looked around, but you just can't buy a beautiful crunching rig for under £130 anymore (CPU, mobo, RAM, PSU, case), can you?

looked around, but you just can't buy a beautiful crunching rig for under £130 anymore (CPU, mobo, RAM, PSU, case), can you? ![]() What is that, around $210 US? Haven't looked at the exchange rate in a while. It's possible to build a rig for close to that (here anyway) if you look around for bundle deals at places like Tiger Direct. I've seen some pretty decent combos there for around $229 but that doesn't include the OS. If you're building a Linux box then there's no problem, but if you want to do Windows you have to spend another $89 for an OEM version of Win Home. I've only done one build and even that started out as an upgrade project. By the time it was done, all that remained of the original pc was the case. It's had a few niggling issues, like I've never been able to make it live with SP2, but it crunches fairly well since it was rolled back to SP1, so it'll stay that way for a while. I'd probably build more but parts have to be ordered and shipped in to get the best prices, and I'm not very patient. And when thet arrive DOA, as did the first MOBO for the upgrade project, you have to go through the hassle of returning and waiting again, etc. You would think that Chicago would have a store with a large selection of computer parts at good prices but all there is near me are Best Buy and Circuit City with very limited parts lines and fairly high prices. This is why I prefer to get OEM rigs and upgrade them. It doesn't cost a lot more than building and there is a warranty and support if needed. Boy! I do ramble on, don't I. Better be careful or I'll start sounding like Jay. ![]() |

This is rip-off England.
Even a cheap SFF....throw in a mobile Athlon/hard disc/gig o ram/bits n bobs and £300 is a more realistic price. |

Partly...........We have always paid over the odds....even excluding vat.
It really annoys me that an English product can be shipped halfway around the world and still be cheaper than the home market pays. |
