Here is an interesting article about Intel's 72 core chip http://www.realworldtech.com/knights-landing-details/. This microprocessor is way too much for the average user since it will do 3 teraflops. I would think that a 1,000 results a day would not be too much to expect from this chip. So 2,000 of these computers should be able to duplicate the results wcg now gets. Now compare that to the over 2 million computers that are supposedly working for wcg. Even if only 10% of them are that would mean 200,000 plus or still a lot more. The time is coming soon when we will not be needed anymore.

According to boincstats, we have just over 300,000 active hosts, not the two millions you refer to.
----------------------------------------Also, isn't this "CPU" the Xeon-Phi? i think this isn't exactly suitable for all projects. It seems more like a GPU, only some tasks can run on it. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

The time is coming soon when we will not be needed anymore. I suspect that a diminishing marginal contribution will not make us obsolete, only lower our rankings. Hopefully, the new technologies will help formulate the correct question for "Deep Thought" to answer. ![]() |

Hello RicktheBrick,
Now compare that to the over 2 million computers that are supposedly working for wcg. Looking in Statistics, I see that yesterdays run time was:Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) 747:241:14:57:37 This comes to 747 years * 365 + 242 days which is 272,797 computer days. After doing a little math, we get a number that rounds up to less than 300 K computers or more than 1/4 M computers. Back in November 2013 it was less than 400 computer years a day! We are doing great, but it will be some time before we reach 2 million computer-equivalents. Lawrence |
