Putting my lab workstations on world community grid

The workstation in my academic lab (~20) have been severely underutilized the past 12 moths, and I would like to have them contribute to the WCG projects.

These are mac OS X 10.7.5 multicore (10-30) workstations.

The main problem is that I am a phd student, and neither I nor my supervisor has the local admin password for all the workstations, this is because they are maintained by an admin who is generally quite unavailable. I was therefor wondering:

Is there a way of installing some command line WCG client that would run on these machines without requiring admin access for installation and execution?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Putting my lab workstations on world community grid

In all honesty, the first thing you want to do is to get this generally unavailable admin to okay putting BOINC on these machines. Otherwise, the first time something goes "wrong" with any of them, this admin will find BOINC there, see that that is what has changed, blame it, remove it and then come down on you for installing it. It is normally wise to get the okay of whoever "owns" machines before installing anything on them. However, since you describe this admin as generally unavailable, I suspect that they are responsible for quite a bit. You might want to think about offering to take on some level of responsibility for these machines at the same time. Keep in mind that you're "just a phd student" and think long-term. It may be your supervisor who assumes some responsibility that they delegate to one of their phd students. biggrin

Re: Putting my lab workstations on world community grid

Hello Bedeho,
This issue comes up from time to time. The answer is always the same. Don't do it unless you have official permission from the department chairman or the relevant official. You are currently living in an environment that is hierarchical but not very authoritarian. In just about anyplace else installing programs like this without permission could lead to punishment. For that matter, Google can locate a number of news items where people at educational institutions suffered.

Bad idea. Try advertising some research programs from the WCG on a bulletin board with pretty-colored printouts for a while, then approach a higher-up to see if BOINC could run on some official PCs as well as on personally owned computers. Have you looked at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewMarketingToolkit.do and https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewBecomePartner.do ?
