So I admit being tempted by the dark side today. Amazon sells CPU time on EC2 and that got me thinking... who would buy CPU/GPU time from individuals?
----------------------------------------A quick Google search popped up names like Gomez PEER, Thread Manager, Digital Generation, and Idle Processor Utilization (IPU) Services. I found very little credible info out there. All the websites seemed really dumbed down and had a touch of multi-level marketing. I installed IPU Services on my stripped down FX-8350 w/ 2x HD7870 rig which I dedicate to WCG, POEM, & Milkyway... they gave me $1US just for signing up. IPU Services claims to have over 97,000 rigs signed up and running their software and to have paid out over $235,000 so far. With their software running, the benchmark told me I had the potential to earn $1.70US per day on just that machine alone with no limit on the number of computers I could sign up under my account (I have 8 others). I took BOINC offline and watched all my cores flatline to zero utilization... after a half-hour of inactivity, I saw a few pennies trickle into my account. Weird. I felt guilty and loaded up BOINC and IPU Services to see how they played together and went to bed. I woke up with $0.27 in my account and no discernible degradation of my BOINC performance. Stats are updated daily it appears on the IPU Services website... they say they pay out in $50US minimum increments so I'll have to wait about a month before I can request the money. Does anyone have experience with these guys or their ilk? -Paul ![]() |

I heard about Gomez Peer when I was into Paid to Click websites, which was like 4-5 years ago. I think it was hard to earn anything there because only a few machines were actually used...

I installed IPU and my maximum daily earnings went from $0.755 to $1.095. power matrix also increased from 45 or so to 64.436.
----------------------------------------I've collected $0.038 (plus $1 from sign-up). It says it has been on for 4 hours but it has barely used CPU time. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

Sounds dodgy to me, all my cores (lots of them) are dedicated to crunching for WCG and others that show a return in wu's completed (points and badges are a bonus and fun!). This, like all of us, is in the hope that 'Every little helps' and may provide some useful data/results for the boffins!

I've installed IPUS on two of my 8-core machines now. I've only been running them for less than a day and have totalled up over $2 between them both. Both machines are still running WCG and Milkyway/SETI on the GPU's full bore.
----------------------------------------One catch I've learned since my original post is that you have to have a new account for every computer you install IPUS on. They claim they're trying to fix that. So I will have to wait for $50 to total up on each machine before I can ask for the first payout. I totally agree this sounds completely dodgy, but for now, there doesn't seem to be any loss to WCG contributions or computer performance. The bandwidth hasn't seemed to change so I know they're not yarding out the contents of my hard drives. If this DOES turn out to be a real deal, it will more than pay for my electricity and justify the purchase of a few more 8-core rigs for me. This will only increase my contributions to humanitarian and science-based computing efforts. And I might selfishly ask that you sign up on my downline. Gotta love multi-level marketing! But until then, I'll wait to see $50 in my bank account. I'll keep you all posted. ![]() |

Just for info sharing, here are my IPUS stats: Desktop, FX-8350 w/ 2x HD7870 = Power Matrix Rating of 100, Max daily earnings of $1.70. Laptop, i7-920 w/ 2x HD5870M = Power Matrix Rating of 81.96, Max daily earnings of $1.39. I noticed when I first ran the IPUS software, it didn't recognize my GPU cards at first on both machines and my ratings were lower. I closed the application, reopened it, and it then saw my GPU cards and gave me a higher score. ![]() |

Thanks.
----------------------------------------I think that is what happened with my machine. When I checked again in the morning after restarting the PC it showed the GPU. Mine is a Phenom II X3 720 BE 2.8 GHZ and a HD5450 GPU. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz [Edit 1 times, last edit by Falconet at Jan 1, 2014 8:07:27 PM] |
