Hello and Merry Christmas !
----------------------------------------First of all forgive my bad english since it's not my mother tongue. I am griding with boinc since 2007. I am the captain of a hellenic team named "Hellas United", and i have a question if anyone knows or can answer. It may sounded stupid but i wanna know if the Results of our griding, so many people, so many machines actually go for good causes. I mean i really like to help and am doing this many years now , but in a recent discuss i had with some veteran members, my concern is that our "work" our results, sold to / or used by Pharmaceutical Companies to become richer and the people who can't afford will not get helped. I am talking of course about Cancer and Aids projects mostly. Thank you for your effort reading this, again happy holidays and Have a nice day. In order to have a project run on WCG, the researchers have to make their results freely available for public use. That means that any of the pharmaceutical companies may also use it. The following is from the overview page at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=aboutwcg
----------------------------------------Are the results produced by World Community Grid part of a commercial venture? No. This is a philanthropic project, not for profit. The direct results of work done by the World Community Grid will be in the public domain. This sounds too good to be true. Am I missing something? Everything benefits! Members who volunteer their unused processing power benefit by not only making their devices more productive, but also by helping make scientific inroads on humanitarian problems. Research organizations benefit by having access to huge amounts of computing power at no cost, enabling them to make more effective use of critical funds. The scientific community benefits because the project results are shared and made available in the public domain. The world benefits because humanitarian research is advanced. Cheers

Hello harris.anastopoulos,
The short answer is no. We are contributing our computer time to non-profit researchers who are putting our results in the public domain. I spent Christmas Eve with my sisters and their children/grandchildren. Christmas I went with my eldest sister to one of her children's homes. After lunch, we sat and talked. My brother-in-law (who was a real estate broker) explained to his children that one of the fastest growing areas in real estate is a no-interest no-due date mortgage for a percentage of the assessed value of a home. This lets the elderly mortgage their home to pay for medical expenses without losing their home. The lender gets the home after the elderly die. Naturally, everything is calculated so that the lender will on average make more money than by any alternative method. We are living longer despite medical problems that would have quickly killed our ancestors. The result is that a larger portion of national wealth is now changing hands for medical reasons so more money goes to medical unions, medical corporations, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, lenders, etc. This makes it easy to claim that one or more of these groups are taking advantage of us. WCG is not directly involved with any of these groups. We are helping people live longer and are not involved in making money by caring for the elderly and sick. Lawrence |
