Looks like the "Maximum CPU time usage" setting was removed from the preferences section... Any particular logic to that decision? It seems to be throwing a wrench in my scheme to keep my laptop CPU usage/heat down. It's a dual-core laptop, and I've been using that preference at my other projects (via BOINCstats BAM) to keep the usage to around 65%. This is a scheme I've been using for 7 years or so, since I had issues back in the day with my old Pentium 4 laptop which sustained some heat damage from overworking the CPU. I'm also trying to keep the fan noise to a minimum.
----------------------------------------If there's a better way to manage the CPU usage on my laptop, I'm open to suggestions. I'm sure things have changed a bit with the clients in the years since I originally developed this solution. |

Suspend work if CPU usage is above % of cpu If you set this value to 0, it means no restriction is enforced. This setting is used version 6.10.30+ of the BOINC agent. If you are using version 6.2 of the software, then the number of processors used will be the lesser of the two fields below. If you are using a version before 6.2, then only the 'at most' field will be used. On multiprocessors, at most use: processors On multiprocessors, use: % of processors These are in the Prefs and allow you to control how much CPU time you use ![]() |

Think nodenaser means the % of CPU time [the throttle], which default used to be 60%, but was reduced to 50% for better stop-go balance. Looked in an old FAQ ... it's indeed not there anymore. The description was "Use no more than X% of processor time:", first item of what is part of the pre-sets.
----------------------------------------Look in the global_prefs.xml and compare to the global_prefs_override.xml. Suspect it just disappeared from the screen, but is still being send from the server to the client. Would be <cpu_usage_limit>100.0</cpu_usage_limit> which is still in my 12.12.2013 refreshed global_prefs. If you use the Standard Settings default it would show as 50 or 60%. And more,
----------------------------------------nodenaser, yes there are better smoother options such as one that can be set to slow BOINC down when it gets too hot [TThrotlle for Windows]. But, [test] client v7.2.29 and higher now have an improved sub-second throttle, which was a WCG requirement and one reason for the wait on supporting a new client. I've tested it on a laptop, and indeed it gave a smooth showing in the Task Manager... not the ol saw-tooth. Needs more testing... it made the OS clock run fast [no joke]... over 1 minute per 3 hours, so there's more testing going on, also to separate GPU and CPU throttling better. Addendum: Yes we know all too well the web device profile structure is old, confusing, aged, lacking granularity on project selecting [at application level] and whatnot, so it's on the board for major redesign. But, it still works for what it has on it at present, after some study ;)

Hmm, guess I just overlooked it in the basic options... But I see I wasn't the only one who was stumped :P So, I guess it wasn't WCG after all, some project must not be syncing the preferences correctly as every now and then I'll find one of my hosts running the CPU load from my default profile.
----------------------------------------An improvement to the "sawtooth" usage would certainly be welcome, as I'm sure that's not the most efficient way to scale the CPU. As per Tthrottle, I've used it a bit in the past but have thus far found it unnecessary on most desktops, and for laptops another concern is fan noise... I suppose I could try and figure out at what temperature the noise becomes too loud, and throttle to that temperature. I've recently picked up a new laptop for my Mom for Xmas, and am of course getting it set up with BOINC... It's a quad-core, and I've never really dealt with a quad-core laptop before. Right now, I'm thinking the best settings for it will be to run 100% load on 2 of 4 cores, that should keep the load down sufficiently and also reduce memory overhead with simultaneous tasks. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by noderaser at Dec 15, 2013 11:41:35 AM] |
