Is my mac too old to use for this project? I'm new and not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I am using a PPC iMacG5 running Leopard 10.5.8. I signed up with the Ripple team and downloaded BOINC (6.10.58). I keep getting the following readouts:

Re: Noob - Is my mac too old?

The techs are looking at rebuilding MCM so it will also run on 10.5.x OS-X. Don't know if there's a PPC version though. Per a look on the system requirement page at http://tinyurl.com/un3ez it seems there presently is only an Intel CPU based version for Mac, so fear there wont be [too few possibly to not have enough active wingman... i.e. results taking overlong to validate, holding up batch completion. This has happened in the past with several sciences for Mac [spread the word in Mac world might change that... it's in amongst about the hits that WCG registers by devices that want work but can't be served for the requested science].

edit: On further hard look, can't see any science supporting the Power PC. Maybe the admin/tech would want to add a general footnote if it's become policy.

Hi boxious,
Yes your Mac is too old, as is mine. crying
I have a PowerPC G4 running 10.5.8.
The WCG techs have told me that there are only around 200 individuals running PPC computers here. There will be no new PPC projects. support is at end of life! sad

You can still use your PPC over at boincsimap.org to crunch useful science though. cool
Please consider this. Thanks!

Re: Noob - Is my mac too old?

Members running Windows 8 or Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8
For members who have upgraded to Windows 8 or Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8, these operating systems will not work with the version of BOINC that we are currently offer (6.10.58). You will need to obtain BOINC version 7.0.28 or higher from the Berkeley site .

We will change our recommended version of the Windows and Mac client after the following activities are completed:

1) Extensive testing of client functionality and resolution of any identified defects
2) Security review of the source code and resolution of any identified defects
3) Observations of the behavior of the official BOINC version in use by large numbers of users

We will be updating to the 7.0 client on all platforms, as the 6.10 version of the client does not install properly on Windows 8 or Mac 10.8.

You can always download the latest Boinc versions here:

Re: Noob - Is my mac too old?

Is this a 'long time no see' welcome back to the forums?

As for the link, that's is the full list for testers... I'd hesitate to share this out and cause members to stumble into a broken version. There's the expanded download page with explanations, much safer for most who leap ahead: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
