Re: Rather Long MCM1 WUs lately

Well at least I know it isn't just me with a computer issue per se, but everyone on the board are seeing some longer running MCM1 WUs. Thanks for the feedback from everyone.

I'll just be patient on these long running MCM1 WUs while the techs work out the kinks on the runtime issues. At least they look to be check pointing well, so if I have to run them over a couple daily sessions to get them to finish, so be it.

Re: Rather Long MCM1 WUs lately

Glad it's not my PC too! My WUs have gone from an average of 2 hrs run time to around 5 hrs!

Hope the WUs are shrunk a bit, as those crunchers using an older & slower PC and/or laptop may be put off contributing.

Re: Rather Long MCM1 WUs lately

True, I happen to have two other family computers in my team, and with these MCM1 WUs running so long, I can't have them run on one older single core laptop. My son's newer laptop is faster (and 3 years new technology) than my laptop, but my son doesn't run his laptop often enough for long enough periods of time to get a 12+ hr plus WU done within his 10 day running window.

I'm noticing more and more of my completed MCM1 WUs are sitting in PV mode and I wonder how many will go into No Reply mode after 10 days due to some folks just not being able to get these big guys done within their 10 day limits.

A few the newer MCM1 WUs now running on my laptop more like 6-10 hours, so possibly the tech guys figured a way to trim them back in size.

Anyway, such is the life of crunchers with a new project - always a few adjustments to make before things settle down for the long haul.

You do not have to worry about the 10 day limit if yours is already completed and sitting in either PV mode. If the wingman does does not complete their WU by that time, the system simply issues that unit to somebody else who has a "reliable" machine who will get it with a reduced deadline. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Re: Rather Long MCM1 WUs lately

Sunday stats, as commented elsewhere, looked weird at noon, the full day completely bonkers at 418 years [highest stats day since about April for any day of the week]. MCM did 180 years [Record], with a mean runtime of 4.8 hours [Record], slightly over the 4.6 hours for Saturday. Fortunately this indicates the 'validated' results of Monster Inc. are in the minority. Chart [Blow up detail of first 17 days at bottom]:

Re: Rather Long MCM1 WUs lately

I have just finished crunching 3 MCM WUs that took 11, 13 & 10 hours to finish (2 valid, 1 PV) and currently slugging away at another 3 WUs that look like they will take over 10 hours each to finish. Have had no problems, only that they take longer to crunch.

My slow old machine was doing fine on these until they got REALLY long. Then, for some reason, it started claiming peanuts for points:

Re: Rather Long MCM1 WUs lately

The two really long running MCM1 WUs I had from this weekend are still crunching into their third day. I think when I get home tonight I'll find that both of them finally finished, but from looking at the stats of what they have both done so far versus time left to crunch, it looks like both of them will end up over 33 hours. Hopefully they both finish correctly and I'll get credit this week for both of them - those two WUs alone will be enough to get me my bronze badge for MCM1.

There are other MCM1 WUs crunching on my laptop as well, and those look like they will finish in the 9-12 hour range, so I guess these long running WUs are shorting up a bit. I can live with 9-12 hour WUs on my laptop, just won't be able to run them on my other two family CPUs - they will just have to continue crunching FAAH WUs.

As for the points sitution - that only would concern me if I was competing in one of the monthly team events, but I would imagine this will get squared away to keep other crunchers happy.

Continuing crunching along as my family gets ready for Thanksgiving later this week..... biggrin

Re: Rather Long MCM1 WUs lately

Was googling around to find the search methodology used and what if anything of a name was assigned to the [home grown] engine used and was send right back to the MCM FAQs at WCG:

Some Mapping Cancer Markers jobs take longer to run than others. Why?
Each Mapping Cancer Markers task performs a search of multiple combinations of potential cancer biomarkers, representing a piece of a larger search strategy. It is difficult to split this extensive search into perfectly uniform pieces. Additionally, the machine-learning algorithms used to evaluate each combination of markers can take a variable amount of computing time to arrive at an answer. Together, these two factors make the run times of Mapping Cancer Markers tasks variable.

Think the emphasized line is sort of the understatement in extensio... the range on one device now stands at 0.05 seconds to 29 hours... waiting on the wingman to throw up Result.out = 1957418.000000 too. praying
