Like the stock market tho..your XRP could be worth .0177 today and .00177 tomorrow. Of course the flip-side is also possiable.

Very true. I'd imagine the reason most people are crunching for XRP is the hope that some day they will be worth a lot more than they are now.

If it was ever 1 USD = 1 XRP, most of the power crunchers on here would make off like bandits.

I'd be crunching XRP or no XRP, so just playing with the house's money so to speak.

Re: Ripple Labs

Thank you, now do you mind me asking how many of what spec machines you have running to do these numbers?
IE: one Intel 2600K machine or "I borged the entire TAAC datacenter" biggrin biggrin

A few minutes and two cups of coffee later:
Decided to run some numbers here just for sheets and giggles
( when you're recuperating the one thing you have is LOTS of time!)
Using your numbers and my machine so that we have all known values I came up with this:
My dualie 2011 E5-2670 V2 dual IB 10 core is for the sake of arguement pretty close to as efficient a machine in terms of electical use vs work done as you can put together today.
Daily output of just over 160,000 WCG points while drawing just over 300W constant.
Using your 5,170,544 WCG points at my 161,000 PPD I get 32+ days to generate that amount so in round numbers this machine could make close to $350.00 USD per month correct?
If my math is correct that's pretty darned impressive to me..l biggrin

I have 6 i7-3770s, 6 AMD quads of various vintages, an i7-870 and a Pentium 4. They are not always all in working order but are never down for too long. The i7s also have a mixture of GPUs that I use for other Boinc projects so usually I have some cores dedicated to GPU WUs.

First off, the amount of XRP earned is based on points and not runtime. Also the problem with infering future Ripple results from my past history is that there are two big variables.

One is the amount of points it takes to earn one XRP. Ripple gives away 1,000,000 XRP to the members of the WCG team Ripple Labs every day. They take the total number of points earned by the team every day and divide it by 1,000,000 to get the daily points per XRP. Then they take my points for that day and divide it by the above calculated value to determine how many XRP I am given. This is my understanding of the giveaway. If anyone wants to correct this, please do.

As you can see by this, the more that new team members join, and the more they crunch every day decreases my daily XRP. Also, there is no guarantee that this giveaway will continue, or perhaps even increase. No one knows.

Secondly, the exchange rate for XRP is very volatile. Two weeks ago it was at 0.034 USD per XRP. This morning it was 0.0177 USD per XRP.

So you can see that not only do I earn fewer XRP every day, but the value of them has been dropping also.

There is much discussion on the Ripple forums about the break-even point for renting servers to crunch on WCG (which many Ripple Labs members do). It is generally agreed that it is barely economical to do so at the current exchange rate. But many Ripple enthusiasts even purchase XRP with real money in the speculation that it will greatly increase in value, so I suspect they will continue renting servers also. So the whole situation is not entirely based on reality in my opinion.

As for me, I'm going to crunch with the WCG anyway so why not accumulate some XRP and see what happens? The bad thing is that I have abandoned the Austin Grid Team which I have been a member of for nine years. I shall return, someday.

Abandoned is a little harsh IMHO. I consider my move more like a leave of absence. biggrin We're still at WCG working for cures and that is the mission after all. peace

o big variables.

One is the amount of points it takes to earn one XRP. Ripple gives away 1,000,000 XRP to the members of the WCG team Ripple Labs every day. They take the total number of points earned by the team every day and divide it by 1,000,000 to get the daily points per XRP. If anyone wants to correct this, please do.

I joined the RIpple Team on the 15th. It shows on Computing for Good, My Hours Contributed 5253 as we speak. It has increased every day. It shows my XRP Earned as 0. Global XRP Earned 21,364,764 XRP and that has been that number since the 15th. My wallet at Ripple.com says it is unfunded.

If they give XRP every day I can not see it anywhere. If anyone here has received XRP in the last 5 days please say so as I have not and I guess will need to contact someone.

Thanks

Re: Ripple Labs

Is this my problem? Do i need a deposit first?

The Currency of the Ripple Network

With the Ripple network, users can send and receive money in any currency for free. Additionally, Ripple has its own internal currency, known as XRP. Users need a small amount of XRP to make transactions, and can also use XRP to make direct, instantaneous peer-to-peer payments within the Ripple network.

You’ll need to acquire a small amount of XRP in order to activate your Ripple account and start using the Ripple network. Here’s why, and here’s how to get some.

(If you don’t have an account yet, go here to create a Ripple Wallet.)

XRP Keeps Ripple Secure

Each user must have a small Account Reserve of 50 XRP in their Ripple Wallet in order to activate their account.
Each user must have a small Action Reserve of 12.5 XRP in their Ripple Wallet in order to make transactions.

@ Falconet thanks
