I've finished testing these E5-2697 V2's and will be returning them tomorrow. I know, I cried to and even hinted " That I could do some long term testing on these for a couple years" but my cries weren't heard and I didn't want to get out my knee pads and beg!
---------------------------------------- I've accomplished what I wanted to get to and that is the top producing machine on WCG for a weeks time as measured by BOINC stats. Now I will grant that there are a couple of quad socket E7-8870 40 core/80 thread machines that will out do this little puny dual socket 24 core/48 thread machine but they didn't. Why? They simply didn't leave them running 24/7 and part of this game we play is like the tortuise and the hare. You have to stay running to be in the game. It's been a fun 17 day run on LINUX learning this OS daily. My thanks to OLD Chap and Jimbo for pushing this old dog to try a new trick! I'll have a write up on this system in a few days over at XtremeSystems forum and will drop a link here when I get it posted. Now as much as I love and will miss these 12 core 2697 V2's all is not lost. I have a pair of 10 core E5-2670 V2's that are mine. 40 threads at 3047MHz vs the 48 threads at 3226MHz on the 12 core chips so they won't do as much but they will do their share. Thanks for your patience and in many cases your help and good advice. Dave PS: Yes, I did beat Buck Nasty's quad socket overclocked 64 core AMD machines for the week..Close but app 7000 BOINC points differentce. I do have to give him a Congrats though. For the cost involved he has one heck of a machine there and he deserves a big pat on the back for what he gets out of both those quad socket beasts! ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Movieman at Nov 20, 2013 2:42:40 AM] |

They certainly did a whole bunch of work during the time you had them running here and we all got to see what they are capable of.
----------------------------------------To top it all you seem to have had a bunch of fun with them and dare I say with linux (or at least what it could do for you) too. Looking forward to your write up and just think..... In a few more months there should be some 15 cores around... I wonder if your "contacts" will lend you a couple of those for a while ![]() ![]() |

Maybe you could try for a quad board too while you're at it.
---------------------------------------- Just kidding, but I can let my mind run wild. Quad board with 15 core HT - wow. I enjoy reading your posts about your machines. Keep up the good work. Cheers

Keep up the good work. Cheers Thanks Joe! I've always stayed away from quad socket because they couldn't be overclocked and were huge in terms of elec usage. Now some AMD quad socket can be OC'd but none of the modern Intels can that I'm aware of. Add in that any skills I have are in the workstation area not enterprise class and you understand why I stick to what I'm comfortable with. Now an interesting fact that I'd almost forgotten because I had those 12 core monsters is these 10 core IB E5-2670 V2's are very nice to work with. Not the computational power of the 12 cores but for everyday use very nice. Low temps in the 42-46C area at full load and that is a big plus. It's like they are just humming along saying "Let me do my thing and don't bother me"..LOL ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Nov 21, 2013 6:36:24 PM] |
