Re: IBM's Watson moves to the cloud

9 Jan 2014 Reuters "IBM to invest $1 billion to create new business unit for Watson": http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/09/us-ibm-watson-idUSBREA0808U20140109
The relevant sentence is "Watson will be deployed on Softlayer, the cloud computing infrastructure business IBM bought last year." So this is still predicting the future, but IBM is betting money on it. So there should be something to see in 2015.

Re: IBM's Watson moves to the cloud

Watson may be the future of search rather than services like Google and Bing.
People are social. Google has proven this and even Hollywood is playing on this with a movie like “Her” where a man falls in love with his device. The long and short of it is we want to interact with technology in a natural human way. While Google is making strides at this, no one (at least publicly) has shown the ability to humanize a machine the way IBM has done with Watson.

It is to be seen whether IBM and Watson are able to emerge as the next great leader in search and it may just turn out that Watson doesn’t change search, but it replaces search.

I suppose if we can just converse with our machines naturally and get useful and intelligent data in return, then why do we really need a search engine?

One thing is for sure, when the power of Watson which by the way can fit in just 3 pizza box size rack spaces is widely made available for our most innovative entrepreneurs to exploit, the outcomes are going to be good, real good.

Re: IBM's Watson moves to the cloud

Thanks for quoting the important parts,
can't stand all the links all the time,
I like the juicy details and I'm good!
(Though if it's real interesting then i do go there)
Watched the watson challenge on TV,
more impressed by the documentary on it,
how 'he' learned etc.

Re: IBM's Watson moves to the cloud

In addition to cancer treatment, banking and other tasks, Watson has also been used to create new recipes and IBM now has a food truck on tour that is dishing them out. Here are some of the ones it came up with:

Creole Shrimp-Lamb Dumpling
Baltic Apple Pie
Austrian Chocolate Burrito
Turkish Bruschetta
Caymanian Plantain Dessert
Swiss-Thai Asparagus Quiche
Portuguese Lobster Roll

Watson

Watson takes on cancer

The first patients will be those newly diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most common type of brain tumor, at seven member institutions of the Genome Center. Dr. Robert Darnell, the Genome Center's chief executive and scientific director, hopes to enroll about 20 patients from each institution and begin the study in the next few months. The project has received institutional review board approval, Dr. Darnell said.

A glioblastoma patient lives just 15 months after a diagnosis, which gives added importance to finding treatments at the outset.
