Hope for brain cancer patients with world-first clinical trial in Brisbane, Australia
24-September-2015 A world-first immunotherapy treatment has offered hope for patients diagnosed with incurable brain cancer. QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in partnership with The Newro Foundation is conducting a novel immunotherapy clinical trial targeting a type of brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), in patients at the Wesley-St Andrew’s Research Institute. There is currently no cure for brain cancer and GBM is the most common and malignant of the glial tumours. About 150 people are diagnosed in Brisbane every year. Why is elephant cancer rare? Answer might help treat humans
Cancer is much less common in elephants than in humans, even though the big beasts' bodies have many more cells. That's a paradox known among scientists, and now researchers think they may have an explanation-one they say might someday lead to new ways to protect people from cancer. Compared with just one copy in humans, elephants' cells contain 20 copies of a major cancer-suppressing gene, two teams of scientists report. The gene helps damaged cells repair themselves or self-destruct when exposed to cancer-causing substances. The findings aren't proof that those extra p53 genes make elephants cancer-resistant, but if future research confirms it, scientists could try to develop drugs for humans that would mimic the effect. Dr. Joshua Schiffman, a pediatric cancer specialist at the University of Utah who led one of the teams, began his research after hearing a lecture a few years ago about Peto's paradox. This refers to the fact that large animals including elephants and whales, have comparatively low cancer rates even though they have many more cells than smaller species. Cancer involves uncontrolled cell growth. The hunt for a vaccine against malaria in pregnant women has provided an unexpected side benefit for Danish researchers, namely what appears to be an effective weapon against cancer.
In collaboration with cancer researcher Mads Daugaard from the University of British Columbia in Canada, malaria researcher Professor Ali Salanti from the Faculty of Medical Health and Sciences, UCPH, has revealed that the carbohydrate that the malaria parasite attaches itself to in the placenta in pregnant women is identical to a carbohydrate found in cancer cells. In the laboratory, scientists have created the protein that the malaria parasite uses to adhere to the placenta and added a toxin. This combination of malaria protein and toxin seeks out the cancer cells, is absorbed, the toxin released inside, and then the cancer cells die. I think the affect requires a VERY high dose, so you'd either have to take your vitamin C intravenously or insert the fruit rectally.
